All of a sudden my Windows Media Player won't work. When I try to start it I get this message: Error Starting Program The COMDLG32.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:SHRegGetValueW OK What does all this mean and how can I get my Media Player working again. Thanks

After 137 posts, I would think you would be aware of this:

Here's how your posts look:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1235351928

The first 2 paragraphs here are worth reading:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1217046552

In addition, when you get an *error message*,
you don't have to make up your own Subject line.
The **actual** error message you get is an EXCELLENT Subject line.

Internet Exploder has its fingers into everything.
Now it's broken and you need to get it fixed. Try these things:

Replace the broken file. (Substitute the name of your broken file.)
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1077920343
   or
Repair IE.
http://annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1042512703

Install the most recent version of Internet Exploder that will work under Win98.

If your hard drive is losing files that is not a good sign.

First look in your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder to see if SHLWAPI.DLL is still there. If
the file is missing then download the latest cumulative security update for your
version of Internet Explorer and your version of Win98. The latest version of SHLWAPI.DLL
for your system will be included.

You will find links to the most recent patches for IE on win98 here:

http://erpman1.tripod.com/iewmpupd.html

Note that the updates on this page are for 98SE not the original 98. If you are using
98 first edition you will have troll through Microsoft's Internet Explorer website
to find the final official patch. Lotsa luck.

If you are using your win98 computer offline and have no plans to connect it to the
internet then I wouldn't go any higher than Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 on win98. On
my computer I noticed that Windows Explorer was LESS STABLE after installing IE6
or IE6SP1. That goes for both 98FE and 98SE.

Well you haven't said which version of Windows Media Player you are using. Open Windows
Explorer and goto Program Files\Windows Media Player and right-click on Wmplayer.exe
and check the version number. If its the default install then I think it will be
v6.4.

Download and install Windows Media Player 9.0 for Win9x of Microsoft, its 13,000Kb.

Windows
Media Player 9.0 for Win9x

If you computer isn't connected to the web then your going to have to save it to
a USB flash drive thats compatible with Win9x. Then you will need to install drivers
for this particular pen drive.

Yes v6.4 is the default installation for Win98SE. I've been using WMP 9.0 for the
past 3 years without any problems so download and install.

You seem to think that Internet Explorer is ONLY a Web browser.
That is dangerously naive.
When I said "into everything",
I meant that what is called "Internet Explorer" is used by Windoze for MANY things.

Let us know what you did to fix the problem.

Useful information like:

"Yes, SHLWAPI.DLL was missing", or "no, SHLWAPI.DLL is still there".

Or "after installing WMP9, it works again".

Hi, Arminius , I will report the results of the repairs. I really got a terrific response from all of you and will go through your advice with a fine tooth comb. Computers just don't go silly, it's human action that causes the problems. I've done something wrong, but what? I'll see if I can find the answers. Cheers

Hi, I tried to reinstall IE6 but the system wouldn't allow that. It wanted access to the Net, which is no longer possible for this machine. I reloaded the Media Player. That did nothing. Finally I reloaded Windows 98. That fixed the Media Player problem but killed my flash drive driver. The system crashed every time I tried to reload the universal flash drive driver. Without a flash drive, the system is useless. So I have decided to trash my W98 machine. Should have done it ages ago. Cheers

I think you gave up too easily. You have everything you need to do a complete reinstall
backed up on CD right?

Of course you have to reinstall the driver for your flash drive. You have a copy
of that handy too right?

There is no point in running Win 98 these days unless you have a specific reason
for doing so, but there is no need to trash your computer. If you have a Pentium
III or higher you can always install Windows 2000.

You don't come across as someone who would build your own computer so I guess you
will be buying a shiny new machine with Vista preinstalled. I am looking forward
to reading your posts in the Vista section.

Oh hi, Arminius, Perhaps I was a little hasty. I'm like that sometimes. Now that I've cooled off, I will tackle the problem again. Only now, there are even more problems to tackle with the machine. I will ruminate on it for a couple of days and work out a plan of attack. Cheers

Here is what it means. COMDLG32.DLL is calling for a function named SHRegGetValueW
that COMDLG32.DLL thinks is inside the SHLWAPI.DLL file.

It isn't. And that's where the error report comes from. I know because I have and
used Dependency Walker on the 98 IE
6.00 SP1 SHLWAPI.DLL file and sure enough, that particular function is not there.

It probably is there in that file in a higer version of Windows no doubt, which means
that your current COMDLG32.DLL is from the wrong platform than the one that you are
currently using.

How did you do that? Not connected to the net and all...

And just as an aside, one can not fire up Windows without a working Shlwapi.dll file,
it will refuse to live. So it was always there and the problem was not with it in
the first place.

OK. My W98 machine, as did a lot of other machines, had problems with malaware. Windows 98 wasn't that great an operating system either. I stayed with it for a while, then upgraded with another machine to XP. I did not see a valid reason to hook two machines onto the Net, so only my XP machine is attached to the Internet. I still use my W98 machine, or should that be "used", to do all of my hard work on such thlings as writing letters, etc. I would then import my work to the XP machine through a flash drive. Once the problems occured, I reloaded W98 to try and repair fault. That created even more problems by eliminating all of my imported drivers. When I tried to reload them, all hell broke loose and now I have a dead computer. Does that anwser your aside?

I knew it would cause a problem trying to reinstall, it causes more problems than
it fixes as you have now found out. You are better of doing a format and a fresh
install. Thats way your drive gets checked for errors with Format.com.

So why is that a problem to you? Just burn them to a CD or copy them to a flash drive.

Pull out the hard drive of the win98 computer and connect it to your XP computer
as a slave. Then you will be able to copy your files from one drive to another.

Make sure the jumpers on the drives are in the correct postions for MASTER and SLAVE
for each drive. The position varies between manufacturers. The information of where
to position the jumper should be on each of the drives.

And after you are finished copying, don't forget to return the jumpers to their original
positions after you disconnect them.

It appears you STILL haven't read this:

It sounds like the problem you are having is M$'s lousy USB support under Win98.
You haven't describe the **method** you are using to install the USB driver
--and especially whether or not
you Remove the previous attempt from Device Manager before trying again.

In addition, if it's just a crappy USB device driver you are trying to install
(because you misplaced the one that previously worked well)
a *generic/universal* USB device driver for Win98 has been discussed here before:
http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=site:annoyances.org+"+nathan+lineback"

For those not paying attention:
He said the big problem with the reinstall was that he lost USB
so "sneakernet" (which he said he had been using) isn't an option any more.

...and ISO9660 (the filesystem on CDs)--even with extensions--doesn't support
filenames longer than 128 characters (ASCII) or 64 characters (Unicode)
--so, that _could_ be a limitation (typically, copying Favorites).

The simplest way to transfer files is to email them to yourself.
This is clumsy and could be complicated by a slow Internet connection speed.
It also exposes a Win9x box to the perils of the Internet.

The next easiest way (without getting any extra stuff) is (as Arminius said)
mounting the HDD as a slave in the box to receive the data.
Substituting it temporarily for the CD drive could avoid buying extra cables.

Another way is "Direct Cable Connection": (You may have to buy hardware.)

Hi, gewg. All of you have come up with a wealth of advice and I thank you all for it. Now referring to those drivers: I have two universal generic drivers. I couldn't remember which one actually did the trick last time. I tried to load each one in turn manually, but I vaguely remember now that they didn't "like" each other. This might have caused some of the latest trouble because I did not attempt to remove one before trying to install the other. Well, whatever, the damage is done now. I have tried to run the w98 computer with a normal start and it now goes straight into "Install W98 mode." It gets to the install hardware part and then comes up with error messages. I could print them out for you if you like. When one goes through the messages, it always ends up with the computer either freezing or shutting down. Actually putting the "Installation disc" in also ends up with the same result. I also used the boot disc that I had made and selected to "start with CD ROM assistance". This got me into DOS mode. I still remember my DOS. But the problem here is that I can't get the computer to change its directory to the C (hard ) drive. It refuses. It stays with the A (floppy) drive. Phew. It appears that the suggestion of taking the drives out of the W98 computer and piggy-backing them onto the C drive in my XP machine might be the only solution. I'm just not sure how to do this.
