disappearing ethernet card

Went to Dell xp on dsl. Set up this IBM Net Vista(my old primary computer) which was on dial up. Removed dial up modem and reinstalled 98SE( after formatting) and installed the ethernet card which came with the unit. Card is an Accton shipped new with the computer and drivers are straight from IBM (Loveno). Want this as a backup and connected thru a router but haven't gotten that far yet. I.E. 6 sp-1 with as many updates as is possible. Connected first time (AT@T dsl) no issues. Used it for about 3 days for testing and adding things such as Adobe reader, "The Fie Splitter ect. Standard things I've always used. Packed it up for later use. Couple of weeks later set it back up and no joy. Checking under devices, no network adapter shown. Just disappeared. In network, Client for Microsoft Networks, Accton fast ethernet controller, and tpc/ip all show and bindings are intact. This problem occurs every time it is left off for a week or more. 4 times now. Exact same problem. Hope someone there can point me to a solution. One issue, and I can't remember when it happened. On bootup, a popup tells me it is looking for drivers for an "unknown" device. There are only 3 pci slots, and the only one being used is for the ethernet card and that message appears whether the card is installed and working or not. Thanks in advance.. Jack....

What the first 2 paragraphs here describe would be nice:

...or if you want to do it yourself, there's the
{P} tag or the {br} tag.

Yuck. I assume you plan to replace that.

If it's what I'm thinking, you should also see a screwed-up Real-Time Clock.
To correct: Replace the CMOS Battery.

Ya gewg_, I thought of the battery, but ignored it because the clock on the taskbar and in bios are keeping proper time. But still one option. Thanks. and I did go HERE

If you're going through a router, then disconnect from it and connect directly to the modem. If that doesn't work - come back. ESG

A new someone giving out bad advice??
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/1236043455

I'm sure Jack knows better than to put a Windoze box on the 'Net barefooted,
but for the others who would read this:

NEVER connect your Windoze box to the Internet without a protective layer
that filters packets.
Some time-to-infection numbers for running an M$ OS on an unfiltered connection
are in the 20-second range.

I'm also curious how this poster accounts for the *temporal* element in the query
--which is the *only* variable revealed.

gweg_ I don't think I've been hit by anything, since I can run the box day after day, as long as it isn't shut down(and disconnected) for a week or more.

That makes the cmos battery suspect, but it keeps time.

Eric, I've held off installing the router until this problem gets solved.

It should be obvious that Windoze is looking for the card's device driver.
Data that Windoze seeks is *always* in the Windows Registry.
I haven't a clue how the **time** element snuck into this,
but somehow the Registry is losing entries.

If, in addition to the *one week span* thing causing a problem,
you can SHUT DOWN Windoze right now
and you have the problem again when you IMMEDIATELY start the thing up again,
that would be a significant symptom.
(...and would make the temporal element a red herring.)

The only thing that makes the slightest sense to me
would be that (just before the 3-week hiatus)
you told Windoze not to _ever_ make any **new** backups of the Registry
then somehow nuked the entry for that device.
Now, each time you power down, that data is lost.

it sure is getting hard to get Google to ignore crap from Red China.) 8-|

gweg_ if I run the computer 5 days in a row, than disconnect for a week or so the network adapter disappears.
Scanreg /restore works. I've tried going to the entry where it last was used and functioned properly, but no joy.

That's gewg_ (pronounced "goog").

My most recent question was:
What happens if you shut down Windoze for 1 minute?

|Scanreg /restore works.
|I've tried going to the entry where it last was used and functioned properly,
|but no joy.
|
My other ponderance is:
In SCANREG/RESTORE, do you see a list of continually-updated entries
...or is there a point in time where that stops
--and all you have are **ancient** backups?

Opening C:\WINDOWS\SCANREG.INI with a text viewer
or (cautiously) with a text editor will show the current status of
Backup=
which is where I postulate the problem is.

gewg_ , hell I can't type. Anyway, if the setup is working properly
A restart in one minute or for that matter 24 hours is no issue.
I'll check the INI file but it may be a week or so. Thanks for the help. I'll post back.

gewg_, I gave this thing enough time to act up. But it didn't.
I checked the ini file and all 5 were there and started.
So it's working. Go figure. I did fdisk /mbr, scanreg /fix, and scanreg /opt. before shutting it down. It's a backup to my xp now. Nice machine. can handle flash drives, has a burner, and a ton of space.

I appreciate your time and input. hope it hangs in there.
Jack
