If you got a decent PC, it can be done for about 80 bucks.

To save yourself a lot of potential grief, run the free Microsoft upgrade advisor
and pay attention to what it sdays about hardware and software. Also, be sure to
check the minimum specs for XP, then double the RAM that Microsoft says is the minimum.

XP is NOT an upgrade.
XP still leaves you chained to Microsoft--even more so than Win98 or Win2000:
XP has Product Activation.
One of these first days, M$ is going to decide to shut down its activation servers
and your copy of XP will be WORTHLESS.
This ASSuMEs that XP will even work on your *existing* hardware.
(I'll bet it won't.)
If your box has 256MB of RAM, this will run on it and won't cost you a dime:
cache of https://shipit.kubuntu.org
It also DOESN'T have Product Activation;
you can put on as many computers as you like--STILL FREE.
...and you DON'T have to *INSTALL* it to try it; it will run from the CD.
