Recovering files from HD

I have a Win98se machine that I use for storing Ham Radio related files. The power supply went bad and damaged the mother board. I'm wondering if I could remove the the HD, configure it as "slave", install it as drive no. 2 in another Win98se machine and access the files. Any thoughts are appreciated.

8-( I think this is an example of where religion bites humans in the butt.
So many keep *believing* that nothing bad will ever happen to *them*.

For less than $20,
http://google.com/froogle?q=intitle:8GB+OR+intitle:8-GB+intitle:USB&scoring=p&price=between
the typical user of a Win9x-era machine can back up his entire drive.[1]

For that amount, you can even get TWO of those
--and, after backing up your "precious" data...

...mail one to your Mom or take one to work and drop it in a drawer.

Do a text search on that page for off-site and
read that section.

Yup. READ THIS BEFORE PROCEEDING:

...and once you aren't going to use it as a bootable drive any more,
for less that $30 you can use the old drive to make a "mirror" of your data.

Again: IT'S NOT A BACKUP UNTIL IT'S OFF-SITE.

[1] I've got a Radio Shack flyer good thru tomorrow that lists an 8GB unit for $20.
Fry's has them on special all the time.

[2] I go back far enough that
HD == High Density floppy and HDD == Hard disk drive.

Yes, that can be done, and fairly easily. Just be sure to jumper it as a "slave". It is probably currently set to be a "master". For more information of jumer setting, go to the support website of your hardrive maker (e.g., Seagate, Western Digital, etc). For an example only, see http://www.seagate.com/images/support/en/us/u5_family_1.gif Another alternative is to place the drive in a USB enclosure box, then connect to any PC that supports USB. By the way, the drive should be readable on an 98, ME, XP, or Vista machine. And, it will likely be readable on most MACs and LINUX boxes.

Richard, I thought that would be the way to accomplish it and I thank you for confirming the process. You've certainly been of assistance. Randy
