Help configuring HP Photosmart printer with USB

Dear friends,
I connected an HP Photosmart 7550 printer to my Windows 98 computer using a USB printer
cable. Computer only has 48MB of memory so could not install the driver that came
with the printer CD. Installed the driver using Windows hardware wizard. Printer
now appears in the Printers tab and is set as default printer. But printer and computer
cannot communicate. Cannot print a test page. Nothing happens. In printer properties
I see a list of ports but there is no USB port, just COM1, LTP1 etc. Is there a way
I can configure a USB port in printer properties and get my printer to use it? Many
thanks and regards.

Does your usb work for anything else?
Did you use the 98 driver?

Thank you for responding to my post. I have not tried connecting anything else to
the computer USB port but I believe the USB port works because when I booted the
computer after connecting the printer, the hardware wizard detected the printer and
proceeded to the driver install. I attempted to install the very same driver from
the link you posted but this could not be installed because the computer only has
48MB of memory and so the driver install program aborted at that point because 64MB
memory is the minimum. So instead I installed the Win 98 driver called "HP Photosmart
7550 series". This installed fine but printer and computer cannot communicate. Do
you think the Win 98 driver is bad? Or does the computer not have enough memory?

Unpack the files from my link if you cannot find them (uncheck install now). Note
if USB shows up when trying the two installs below.
1. Delete the installed printer. No re-boot.
2. Run setup.exe from C:\Temp\photosmart\enu\9x\Disk1. The path reflects where I
unpacked.
3. Test. If no go...
4. Delete the installed printer. No re-boot.
5. Run "add new printer" and choose "have disk".
6. Point to C:\Temp\photosmart\enu\drivers\win9x_me.
7. Test.
You might also try running usbready.exe at C:\Temp\photosmart\ccc to check the ports.
q. Do you think the Win 98 driver is bad? Or does the computer not have enough memory?
a. I doubt the installed driver is bad, but it may not support usb. You may need
to get memory or a parallel cable if the printer has a connector. Memory would be
your best bet.

The minimum hardware specifications for running M$ OSes are a bad joke.

are a very un-funny joke from M$'s 1998 marketing department;
this far into the 21st Century, it's just not funny at all.
...and I'll bet you a dollar that after 5 minutes of you using your computer,
your hard drive is CONSTANTLY churning.
