For some reason I am not able to delete any items from the sent items folder. I have done it many times in the past to get rid of unnessessary stuff. Any ideas?

Not really, Ken, but three things I might try in your place:

(1) Do a search for the file "Sent Items.dbx" and, when you find it, delete it. This may conceivably clear whatever is causing the problem. The folder will be automatically re-created next time it is needed.

(2) Or, when you find the file, check its Properties. If it has somehow become set to Read Only, I assume that would prevent you deleting messages. If that's the case, uncheck Read Only.

(3) Maybe you could use the "Move To" command to transfer messages to the Deleted Items folder.

Thanks Alan. Your first idea worked just fine.
