Win98SE won't boot after SpyBot message

I received the following criptic message this morning: Spybot - Search & Destroy has encountered and terminated a process that is listed as part of a malicious software. Process ID 4294841615 Filename MSGSRV32.EXE Found in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ Identified as (this was blank) I opened Explorer and looked at the file. It looked okay so I didn't do anything with it. I closed Explorer and I selected OK in the SpyBot message and shutdown Win98. Later I tried to boot into Win98SE it crashed and will not boot even in the Safe Mode. My system is dual booting with Puppy Linux which will still boot. I cannot find MSGSRV32.EXE in the C:\ drive when I look for it in Linux. Would missing MSGSRV32.EXE cause Win98SE not to boot? Did SpyBot do something with MSGSRV32.EXE? Assuming that SB quaranteened or deleted the file where would it go and how do I put it back in my Win98 system? How can I find a new copy of it on the Win98SE disk? I'm kind of lost and I really don't want to have to reinstall windows at this time!

I have tried to boot into windows using the SafeMode and using the step-by-step confirmation method. SafeMode ends at a fatal exception "the blue-screen" Step-by-step ends with a message that is so quick I can only read "Error loading kernel .........."

Your Windoze install is too trashed to bother with.[1]
You could spend A LOT of your time AND OURS trying to fix this
by applying band-aids, and STILL not get a working system.

If you don't have your data backed up to external media,
mount the HDD as a slave in another (working) box and back up those files.
After that, FDISK the thing to snuff any Boot Sector viruses,
FORMAT it, reinstall everything (OS[2] and apps), then copy over your data files.

[1] If you were getting further,
you could look at BootLog.txt and see what is happening,
but here the core of the OS (the kernel) is kaput.
"It's dead, Jim."

[2] I suggest a modern OS that doesn't ASSIST with self-infections
and otherwise crap itself.

(If you don't have 256MB of RAM, there are other variants of this FREE OS.)

Please excuse the bad spacing in my previous messages -- I didn't understand the
tick box at the bottom of the messages.

@gweg- : I am already using a modern OS. From my 1st message: "My system is dual
booting with Puppy Linux which will still boot."

I have very little data that I need to save from my C:\ partition so that I can readily
get rid of Win98. The only reason I keep it is because I have several programs that
are quite old but I can't find anything as good currently available.

It seems that I will have to trash Win98 and start again. I can't figure out how
I could have gotten a virus because I use Win98 on the internet only to download
antivirus updates and adjust the clock with Nistime.

Didn't recognize the link.

2007 is because I live in a remote area and didn't have the internet before mid-2007.

  • I posted the "What 2007 ???", because it is a link for the same post from the year 2007 on another Forum.
  • Use Linux to recover the Files you want to save.

A description of what msgsrv32.exe does is at:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138708

I see you have posted to the Spybot forum. They should be able to help you.

    http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=4

Spybot-S&D does save backups of the problems you have fixed so they can be recovered
    if something stops working.

The removed files are put into .zip archives in:

    C:\Windows\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\

    Yeah---I remember reading that now. {forehead palm}

As James said, you can access those under Linux.
Linux understands FAT32 (and about any other filesystem ever created).

    |The only reason I keep it is because I have several programs that are quite old
    |but I can't find anything as good currently available.
    |
Tried running those under WINE? (No M$ OS needed--no Microsoft Tax(tm).)
    http://google.com/search?q=WineHQ
    (GPL'd Free Software)

VirtualBox (with a working Windoze install) is another way to avoid rebooting.
(Again, a fair amount of RAM is required for modern stuff like a VM.)
    http://google.com/search?q=VirtualBox
This is GPL'd Free Software as well.

    |It seems that I will have to trash Win98 and start again.
    |
Be careful. Installs of old M$ OSes overwrite the Boot Sector.
As soon as you start to reinstall W98, your Boot Manager will be toast.

Your Linux install (if on the same physical disk as your primary Windoze partition)
may get nuked as well. (M$'s FDISK is very stupid; Linux's FDISK is a better choice.)

    |I can't figure out how I could have gotten a virus

Do you run a firewall? Don't forget: Just because you only want Port 80
    the other 65,000 ports are open--unless blocked/stealthed.

...and there's always the CD drive (and AutoRun)

ancien: Thank you for your reply.

I didn't get any help from the Spybot Forum.

I looked for the msgsrv32.exe file using Puppy Linux and it was gone. I couldn't
find it on the Win98SE cd so I reinstalled windows. Everything seems to be working
    okay.
