A BLUE screen is recently appearing on shutting down system indicating an error "at 0028:C02987178 in VXD VWIN32 (05)+000012DO the current applic will terminate...." I have NOT installed any new program. Have no idea what causes this window to appear before shutting Windows. To continue on the shutting down process I have to "press any key to terminate...' I have been keeping my computer on all the time to prevent this occurrence, just in case it makes things worse.... I'm not a computer genius by any means and I will certainly appreciate some help from the forum. Thanks samantha

Well Samantha that could be making things worse by not switching of your computer.

Everytime it starts up it creates a backup of the registry just incase there is a
problem.

As your computer is startup up keep the CTRL key press until you see the DOS menu
showing Safe Mode. Press number 5 Command Prompt Only, at the C:\ prompt type
in Scanreg /restore with a space in between and choose a date before this
problem occured.

How long have you had this problem?

Which web browser(s) are you using with number and service pack?

When this problem first occured you should have done a Scanreg /restore.

Keith, thanks for your reply. The browser in use, most of the time, is Firefox 3.0.8 Other browser rarely used is Expl 6 with all security updates.. I'm on Window98SE. I don't know the service pack #. I don't really remember the exact date the problem occurred, but should be back 6/7 weeks approx. Keith, I'm terrified in doing the scareg/restore: I'm afraid I may make things worse since I don't have any specific date to restore registry. I have been using CC cleaner from time to time. Also I'm using Spybot that sometime is slow in opening for the updates. That's all I can tell you. Hoping you can guide me through this. Is this problem serious enough to affect the whole computer? Thanks for your help samantha

Sam, If you've already did what Keith asked you to
you to do, and It didn't help! Try defraging,
your computer, First run ccleaner shut down then
restart and defrag, If it won't defrag, Run scandisk
If you need to run scandisk make sure to put a ckeck
where It says fix errors

If you using IE6 then I just wondered if you were using IE6 with Service Pack 1.
Open IE6 and click on Help\About Internet Explorer and check the number it
should be listed in Update Versions: SP1

|I don't really remember the exact date the problem occurred, but should be back
|6/7 weeks approx.

|Keith, I'm terrified in doing the scareg/restore: I'm afraid I may make things worse

How many weeks have you had you computer running all the time, 6 or 7?

Well you can't do any damage doing a Screnreg /restore because you have other dates
to try. I know it will only show 5 different dates because there are only 5 backups
made. You can increase this number but there is a fiddle facter involved.

|I have been using CC cleaner from time to time. Also |I'm using Spybot that sometime
|is slow in opening for the updates.

I use CCleaner and that won't cause a problem. I've never used Spybot on any system
I've used I don't see a need for it.

As Spirit suggests you can try a Scandisk and a Defrag. I don't know how often you
use these if ever? If you've never used them then it may help your system but not
your main problem.

You can Scandisk and a Defrag in Safe Mode (as intructed above) so that nothing else
is running that could interfere.

FF3 is _NOT_ supported (natively) under Win9x.
Did you do some special tweaking to get that going?
(e.g. If you installed KernelEx,
**that** may have found an incompatibility with your install.)

The suggestions you have been getting are nice,
but this is a family of problems that is among the most difficult to pin down.

Hi Spirit: tried what you suggested but...no luck. I just wonder how serious this problem could get. It only occurs on shutting down and by hitting any key it disappears and computer shuts down normally.. All other programs and Windows seems to be OK. No error picked up by scandisk and CCleaner does not find any error in the registry. Just a mistery! Thanks again samantha

Hi DanTheMan : the DxDiag reported no error in all tabs. I have cleaned up the temp folder and I will report back to you if remedies worked. Thanks for your help samantha

Sam, In msconfig startup tab, do whats below,
Uncheck a few shut down restart, If it hangs you
can recheck them or just uncheck a few more and
repeat above.

The only startup items you should leave running are:
ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile

Your antivirus program (trust me, you won't have a hard time figuring out which one is your antivirus program. It is pretty obvious.) You can leave the programs you have unchecked if
you have shortcuts on your desktop or in you
programs

Since you need these startup items to be running all the time in order for your computer to work properly, make sure there is always a check mark next to all of these startup items.

If you don't see one or two these items in your list of startup items, that's OK. For example, some people may not have a LoadPowerProfile while others may have two. The big thing to remember is that you don't want to uncheck any of these files if you have them.

Good Luck

Well I don't have the anti-virus running all the time whats the point they all use
system resources. You can scan anything you download or anything you are given. Depending
on who's AV you are using there is always part thats running in the background that
Task Manager doesn't show so your quite safe even when your surfing. AVG 7.5 has
Avgamsvr.exe running all the time.

It's looks like I succeeded in eliminating the blue screen (fatal exception...) by applying most of the recommended suggestions from the board. In addition I have uninstalled the Spybot prg. because it was acting kind of strange on its opening process. I have now shut down the system a few times and it shuts down quickly and so far no...blue terrifying screen ! TG. I just hope it won't appear again. Many thanks to all of you guys for your time in helping me in solving this problem. This board is GREAT. samantha

There are better boards than this one Samantha but I don't think I'm allowed to advertise
