Internet Explorer vs. Firefox: printing problems

I'm using (on my current desktop PC) Win98SE with Internet Explorer 6 and FireFox 2.0.0.20 (and, in case it's relevant, my printer is a Canon S750, inkjet with 4 easily refilled ink tanks). I think that is the latest version of FF that will run under Win98.

FF is my default browser and I only use IE for special purposes, the most frequent of which is: there are a few web pages that just don't print correctly from FF. If I want to print them, IE can usually do it.

The problem is that when printed from FF, the problem pages may have a variety of faults (not present when the page is seen on the monitor) such as a new page part-way down a real page (probably after certain images followed by text), images and text overlapping, text cut off at the right margin. And... the print preview is not always a good predictor of what will be on the paper. I don't know any way to predict when this will occur: I print the page with FF and, if it's "bad", I run IE, copy the URL from FF, print from IE and then quit IE.

Does anybody have a similar problem or explanation or better solution? (Sorry, I can't find an example right now.)

Oliver

Important concept missing: **without 3rd-party kernel update**.
If you can stand the "AwesomeBar", FF3 can be made to work with W98.

As this forum is about W98 and the M$ apps that ship with the distribution CD,
your post is a bit off-topic.
Since you recognize, however, that IE is a dark pit,
you are granted Special Dispensation. 8-)

The proper place for problems with an app is at the forum for that app e.g.
http://forums.mozillazine.org

If you will restrict your search engine queries to just that site
and use use phrase syntax, you can narrow down the number of hits considerably:
http://google.com/search?q=site:mozillazine.org+print+"edge.of.the"

Another place to take a problem with an app
is the User group / Usenet group for that app e.g.
news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.support.firefox
That group is archived at and otherwise accessible thru Port 80 via
http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.firefox

The Usenet archive is also quite searchable e.g.
http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.firefox/search?...q=insubject:print+OR+insubject:printing
http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.firefox/search?...q=print-preview

The database of known Mozilla problems is at
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=print
The most courteous (but not the easiest) way of dealing with a problem
is to search the database for reports similar to yours
and add any symptoms you can to existing filed bugs.

As FF3.5 was just released (replacing FF3.1),
FF2.x has been deprecated even further.
I don't think there is a much interest in patching that trunk any longer.

As for updating your apps: Patching your Win98/WinME kernel with
cache
of http://www.sox3qEaSjNMJ:x86.neostrada.pl/KernelEx

allows you to run a bunch of apps that are otherwise NT-only e.g.
cache
of http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=120479%26view=findpost%26p=844944
