I'm betting the packaging for the device
DOESN'T say "Windows 98 anywhere on it.

Might be eaier to take the Printer back since it is new, and exchange for one the
works with windows 98

Check the manufacture's support website for win98 drivers for the printer. If they
are listed, download and install, then attached the printer. If none are listed
for win98 (only listed for XP, Vista, MACs), then return the printer for a refund.
And, before buying another one, check first that it says it supports your operating
system.

Also, be sure to know whether you have plain win98 or the second edition on the computer.
I have seen many cases in recent years in which 98SE is supported, but plain 98
is not.

Finally, it is possible that you will have to settle for an older printer to get
win98 compatibility.

The particular error message which you are getting typically means that you are trying to install software that does not support Windows 98.

The "missing export" error refers to the fact that the software requires the Windows operating system to provide certain functions (software routines). The error message indicates that the functions which the software needs are not present in the version of Windows you are running: this is typically because the software is calling a Windows XP function which does not exist in Windows 98.

Some functions were added to Windows 98 Second Edition that did not exist in Windows 98 "Gold" (a.k.a. Windows 98 "first edition"). So it is worth upgrading to Windows 98SE (Second Edition) if you are using the original ("Gold") version of Windows 98.

But unless it says on the box that the printer's software supports Windows 98, the chances are that this model of printer will NOT work with any version of Windows 98, not even with Windows 98SE.
