Redmond (finally) scraps Microsoft Works

"The Vole[1] has been muttering about killing off the software for over two years,
which is probably why it has been largely ignored."

If you've been saddled with this piece of junk,
you probably know that it isn't compatible with ANYTHING[2],
setting an all-time low--even for Micros~1.

...and, as mentioned in that article[3], there have been BETTER options for YEARS
(and since I'm the one pointing them out,
I think it goes without saying that they involve Free Software).

[1] The writers at El Reg (motto: "Biting
the hand that feeds IT")
make great sport of M$, in recent years referring to them as a small rodent.

[2] ...and to those still struggling along with just WordPad,
you also have my condolences.

[3] ...OOo, however, is the most conservative of this lot
and its children (being more tolerant of M$ technologies)
are better candidates in this regard.
Ubuntu Linux (as well as KWord and Abiword) were also mentioned in my 2nd link.

8-) Fun stuff. Never was there a product deserving such an inglorious burial.
(In order to get the full effect,
I had to enable *Allow images that don't come from the originating server*;
Gecko is just so superior to everything else WRT tweakability.)

I screwed up the html a bit. I didn't want the annoyance stuff to scroll. Just the Gif.

XP forum gets a lot of posts about the incompatibility of Works. Good riddance.:)

Yeah, I noticed that. You left out the {/marquee}.

Amen.
I know a guy who is a top engineer (self-employed) who used Works
(and apparently STILL uses it).
That is a fly in the ointment, inferring that his decision-making ability is shaky.
(Joerg has recently done a Linux install which he runs in a VM,
so he isn't a complete lost cause.) 8-)

Novell's go-oo.org is gratis and can import M$Works files,
then convert them to M$Office formats and/or to OpenDocument Format (ODF).
go-oo is cross-platform and is a fork of OpenOffice.org.

OOo incorporates some stuff after go-oo has gotten it working (e.g. VBA macros).

The Wiki link in my OP also lists a command line utility for converting
(to ODF wrapper formats--which can be opened with OOo).

"I know a guy who is a top engineer (self-employed) who used Works (and apparently STILL uses it)."

I remember when Bill Gates was interviewed (via remote viewing) by a panel of journalists and David Brinkley told him he was (still) using Easywriter and thanked Gates for Microsoft making that. Gates denied it in his famous whiny tones and the perplexed Brinkley pointed out that "Microsoft" was on the splash screen. Gates is a notorious teller of quarter truths. M$ft bought the program from someone else and modified it. Maybe he meant that. Maybe he meant that he personally didn't code it. But his response did not rise to the level of plausible deniability because it was implausible.

Thinking back to a lecture on tape in my systems analysis class, some analyst said there were 3 criteria for a successful program:

  1. Does it work?
  2. Does it satisfy the user?
  3. Can it be upgraded?
Since Microsoft has often had file formats incompatible with Microsoft, it has often failed on #3.
