Removing Superantispyware

Well, solved memory problem then this popped up.
Have been running SUPERantispyware 4.24.0.1004 with no problems, but in last attempt,
pops a "looking for a newer browser" box and stops there. I'm using I.E. 6.0 SP1
and Firefox 2. xxxxx.
Figured it was corrupt since it still supports 98SE, I went to add/remove and uninstalled.
Seemed to proceed O.K. then froze the computer.
Performed a hard shutdown. No option.
It automatically runs scanreg on startup (O.K.) then I went to add/remove. It was
gone.
From past history I know some of these programs leave a lot of garbage behind. So.....
I deleted the folder with the remanants of the program, searched files and folders
( including hidden) and removed a few more still left over.
Did the same in registry with a couple dozen entries and keys to clean it out. I
know !! careful. I've done this dozens of time and careful is my first consideration.
Fine.
Reboot downloaded a new version (4.30.0.1004) and tried a re-install. No Joy.
On install attempt, it pops a ( you still have 4.24.0.1004 installed, would you like
to remove it) box.
Clicking O.K. it doesn't. Just goes in a loop of bringing that last prompt back up,
and will not re-install .
Been thru Google looking and nothing relevant comes up.
Any suggestions. One of the really good tools I have on this IBM. Says it stiil supports
98.

D'oh. I was thinking about M$'s XP-and-later-only band-aids.
I don't make any attempt to stay current on that junk.
After I stopped using M$'s online apps in 2002,
my need for band-aids went WAY down.
I saw your biggest problem in your OP:

Jack,
Obviously there are still some Registry entries left over. I suggest you install
and run RegSeeker (free from the folowing link). It has a built in Search function
if the Registry Cleaner fails to find anything related.
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Sounds like you're familiar enough with the Windows Registry to avoid removing anything
harmful.
Happy huntin'.

Thanks Bob. Makes sense.
On deleting a program, I always check the executable to see if the program uses any
aliases. It's common,
But I found none for this one.
I'll follow thru with your suggestion.

Thanks Bob,
Good and bad news. Regseeker found 11 entries and removed them.
No problem installing the program, but it failed to register a .Dll file via a popup
notice. I tried manually but it would not go.
Seems it supports 98SE but not the browser. Makes no sense to me.
Again, thanks.

Linux doesn't have this problem because it doesn't have the silly Windoze Registry.
Linux also doesn't need these silly anti-xxxxxxx apps.

The Linux package manager(s) also resolve all the dependency issues for you.
With a few clicks, you can tell your Linux package manager
which app (or bunch of apps) you want to download, install, update, or uninstall
then just let it do all the work.
(Multiple actions can be handled as ONE operation e.g. download/install/update.)
...and while stuff is being installed on a Linux box,
you can also USE the box--just as if nothing special was happening.
With Linux, you don't have to reboot after installs either
(unless you replace part of the kernel)
...and the Ksplice app is
doing away with that last case.

Jack,
Which browser would that be? You listed IE6Sp1 and FireFox 2.XX. Don't tell anyone,
but I'm running IE6 SP1 and SuperAntiSpyware, although it's with XP PRO SP3.I have
not tried SASW with Win98.
What .dll are you referring to? Since you're running Win98SE the IE repair tool may
still available either from System Tools>SystemInfo>tools Menu or Add/Remove programs
in Control Panel. Give it a try.

Hi Bob,
You and I are running the same 2 operating systems. The only difference is mine are
on 2 different computers.
The .dill that doesn't register is (SASWINLO.dll.
It's a known SAS file.
The version I was running was 4.24.0.1004. Without my knowing it, when running an
update on a prompt by SAS they were kind enough to upgrade me from dash 24 to dash
30.
Dash 30 won't work on 98SE.
I cleaned it all out finally, and with a lot of looking found a dash 24. Installed
fine.
Ran it, but when asked to upgrade definitions, I refused.
Did fine with 14 day old definitions. Great.
Re-ran it with updates and opps. Here comes dash 30 again, and it's problems.
Cleaned the mess up, and as of now is dash 24 but as best as I can tell, will not
be able to keep it current.
But SAS tech said 98/98SE accounts for approx. .05% of their accounts, and they can't
justify keeping up with a system with so little demand.
If you got a work around, I'm all ears and eyes.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Jack,
Looks like the end of SAS for Win98SE. The link below defines that .dll. Not Pretty.
involved in Startup/shutdown Logon/Off.
4.24.0.1004.
I guess you could try replacing the update versions with version 4.24.0.1004. after
each update. No telling how long it will work, if at all.
In other words rename the update .dll and insert -24 to see if it will work at all.
I can't see why there would be much to change in the .dll given what it does.
Other than that I see the best option is finding a different program to replace SAS.
I reloaded my 98 HDD but couldn't get the Modem to function. ?? been using it for
years with 98 then XP. Still works fine with XP though. I suppose it may not even
be the Modem. Diagnostic Software says it works fine.
So I guess your problem gives me a heads-up. I do have SAS on the 98 HDD. Post back
if you find a solution.
Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours.
