On Media Player there is a history of played items when you drop down the File menu
Is there any way of removing this, deleting items or altering the number shown?

You'll have to hack the registry. Open regedit.exe and go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\RecentFileList
In the right pane delete all the FileX value names. Hack the registry at your own
risk.

Please let us know what works.

Found the answer to my own question! By downloading the Media 7 Bonus Pack, there
is a program which deletes the history/play list.

The MRU Cleaner removes the RECENT FILE LIST which shows on the Media Player screen,
BUT/BUT the files can still be seen by going to FILE, then OPEN, the see the FILE
NAME field, and click on the little black arrow on the right side. VOILA, all your
recently used files. The only way I have found to remove this list is to create a
bunch of dummy files and select them one at at time till the fill up the list. If
there is another solution, I would like to know it. Hopefully I am a dummy and it
there is a much more simple solution.

This website http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/windowstips/story/0,24330,2587782,00.html
contains a registry hack to clear the recent file list. All you do is download the
batch file they provide, save it, and run it whenever you want to clear the list.
You don't even have to restart your computer when you do it.

Is it just me or does anyone else think it's pointless posting an answer in September
2003 to a question that was asked in June 2001.......????

Hello.
I just found this post and found it helpful, myself.
I'm also finding not being able to clear the list is annoying, and can't find the
7.1 Bonus Pack - MS must have removed it for some reason. The bonus packs available
are only for XP and I'm using W2K. Might have to try the registry hacks. No excuse
for a mature product to lack of such basic courtesy feature.
Best of Luck - Walter!

If anyone sees this response, I'm letting all my fellow frustrated windows media
player users know that to easily eliminate the history of played files, all you need
to do is go to the tools menu then select options. From there click on the privacy
tab and uncheck the box that indicates that played file history is on. Once that
is done click on the "clear history button" then click "apply" and finally click
"ok" You will no longer have played files filling up the file drop down menu. I hope
I explained this well as I know how frustrating it can be, and before I fell upon
this solution (which by the way I found on my own) I felt like pulling my hair out,
keep the hair on your head, this is the solution!

WOW! That would be great! Now if only WMP 9 HAD a Privacy tab in the Options!

This thread has gone on for years, it seems...lol. But I just decided I wanted to
know about this. I took Bobstur's suggestion and hacked the registry, and it worked
just fine. Note that you have to delete the keys (the entire thing, not just the
text that says the file name). ALWAYS BACKUP WHATEVER YOU'RE CHANGING! And don't
delete the Default key, I don't know what'll happen if you do. But I do know what
will happen if you try deleting the information by using "Modify Binary"--it'll crash
Media Player. LOL. That's why I made a backup first.

I was having the same problem with Media Player 10 running XP. I finally found the
answer, although I don't know if it applies to Media Player 7.1.
To remove the current list of files displayed in the Open dialog box in Windows XP,
do the following:
1.
Right-click the Start button, and then click Properties.
2.
On the Start Menu tab, click the Start menu option, and then click Customize.
3.
On the Advanced tab, click the Clear List button.
