display email addresses in Outlook Express

Is there any way to tell Outlook Express (or Outlook) to ALWAYS display the sender's
email address in the main view page? The default behavior seems to be that it replaces
the email address with the user's name where that is available, and hides the email
address. You have to select that message and get its properties before it will tell
you the email address, which I find infuriating.
I would like it to display the sender's email address either all in one column with
the sender's name or allow me to add a column for the sender's email address so that
they are adjacent to each other.

Chris, I too want to have the email senders address shown. Have you had any luck
in finding out how to do just that?

For Windows 2000 users with Outlook 2000: I don't know if these links will help your
annoyance, but I have found that when you move your Outlook 2000 PST file to a different
location on your harddrive, Outlook replaces Contacts' email addresses with first
and last names. Very annoying.
To make matters worse, when you try to get the Properties on the name (to try and
recover the actual email address), it displays the error message, "The name or distribution
list entry has been deleted and is no longer a valid address book entry. The item
cannot be found." Now my day is going *just* perfect.
If you follow the "Change the E-mail Type of All Contacts" procedure at...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q180522&
... it at least restores the email address Property data, though it still continues
to display the Contact name rather than the actual email address.
Now, you can replace these by hand as shown here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q277747&
Or, to do it en masse, use the export/import method as described in the first link,
but with this new twist: When you import your Contacts, follow step 7 ('Click "Clear
Map," "Default Map'), but instead drag "Email Address" from the FROM column into
the "Email Display Address" in the TO column. (Repeat for Email 2 and Email 3, respectively.)
This will eliminate the "Email Display Name". What will remain, after the import
is done, is the email address.
Voila, the email address are displayed in the email fields! Right as rain.
As usual, an operation of this importance requires you to make good backups of your
data, lest something strange happen. Thus far, this Export-out, Import-in method
doesn't appear to have any downsides (i.e. impacting the other data fields), but
you never know...
The kicker to all of this appears in the second MS article above where it says,"This
behavior is by design."
I love it.

Chris,
Yes there is a solution, however, like all Microsoft programming, it is oblique,
kind of like an end run in football. (Programmers think for themselves, I applaud
programmers who think for the user)!
The solution is three step and done when you enter the address for the first time.
First, use the address book to enter a contact.
I usually have the email address on the clipboard ready to paste with the old keyboard
crtl+v keystroke.
Fill out the address book, 1st name, last name, email address.
Second, paste the email address into the nick name
Third, inspect the Display Name dropdown list by clicking on the dropdown arrow,
the email from the nickname is now on the display list. Select it and all is well
I hope I understood what what you wanted to accomplish. I think it gets the job done,
though the program structure to accomplish this is an annoyance indeed!
Sincerely,
Mark Swanson

If you do not get a 'distribution list deleted' message but just can't get the actual
email address to display - I found this to be caused by a discrepancy between the
setting for 'name displayed' eg. 'Bloggs, Joe' or 'Joe Bloggs' between the ADDRESS
book and the CONTACT list in Outlook 2000. EVEN IF the properties show them to be
displayed the same - reclick on the one you want in address book and it will automatically
update CONTACTS to match - i.e. show actual email address. This is a problem where
an address book is imported (I imported from Lotus). This saves an enormous amount
of hassle that I had no time to try in other solutions given.

Both of their replies ONLY will only display
the email address of someone that EXISTS
in your contact list of trusted correspondents !!
I do not need this info.
What I am interested in is having the email address
(NOT the contact name) displayed for any incoming
mail from ANYONE that is NOT in my contact list.
For example there are way too many people using the
contact name "John", so when a new one comes in,
I want to know WHICH John this is ...
ergo show me the email address PLEASE !!
THANKS :)

I've been researching this for some time, and haven't found a way to make Outlook
Express display the e-mail addresses for all messages in the preview pane. However,
you can get the info for one particular message by highlighting the message then
clicking on FILE and going to PROPERTIES. The full headers will be displayed, and
you'll be able to see the e-mail address along with the name.

I was Googling about the same complaint.
Not the solution that I was looking for, but I did find that w/ Outlook 2000 on a
WinXP machine, if I simply double click the Address Book Icon, I can see the email
address. It only shows on, and I'm assuming that it's the default email addess.
Still I'd like to see the option to always display email address instead of Contact
name.
