how do I get to MS-DOS and then back to windows 98 again to fix a prob w/ software

this will probably seem like the world's most elementary question but: I have Windows
98 and I have Blackice Defender (personal firewall software) running and want to
run a disk defrag but their site (NETWORK ICE site) says the defrag doesn't complete
because files are always open --- so they say that to fix this I go to
START
MS-DOS Prompt
and then type in the following at the '>':
cd "\Program files\Network ICE\BlackICE"
blackd stop
exit
My question is this: After I type in 'exit' and hit enter, does this take me back
to my windows 98 desktop? and after I run defrag, how will I turn my software back
on or should it return to normal operation if I restart my computer after defrag?
Thanks for helping a totally non-computer literate person!! Kim

Go from Start to Shutdown and select Reboot to MS DOS and when you finish making
your changes type in exit and hit enter and you will reboot back into Windows. Afterward
just reverse your steps to reset it to how it was before you made changes. Good luck

Gotta disagree with Carl. If you enter those commands, when you do what he says
you'll be rebooted back to Windows without having run defrag.
Kim, regarding your question and procedure, the answer is yes, after entering
'exit' the MS-DOS window will close. Then you can run defrag. After that a reboot
should start the firewall again.
No problem with elementary questions - I like the ones I know the answer to.<

I thought all you wanted to do was to reboot into DOS and disable Blackice Defender
then reboot into Windows.

The problem with that is that the firewall starts up with Windows. So to run defrag
with Windows running the firewall needs to be turned off from a DOS box in Windows.
