Can't open files of type 'Application'

After installing Norton AV s'ware, and latest def. files, I now can't execute or
launch any 'programs'. I get 'ueko.exe missing - Program needed to open files of
type 'application' is missing!
Never heard of this.. can't find any reference to ueko.exe anywhere... Reboot does
launch windows, but for each and every program that is supposed to start, I get this
error. I also can't execute any program.. including windows explorer, or any other
program.. HELP!!
This is a windows 98 system..

Those are symptoms of a virus although I don't understand how installing Norton AV
would have initiated it. So I assume you can't run the Norton AV. You might want
to hunt around Norton's AV Center.
One way some of these things work is to modify the exefile key in the registry
which prevents .exe files from running. If you want to try modifying the key you
can rename the registry editor, regedit.exe, to regedit.com and it will run as a
.com file. Then go to the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command
and edit the Default data by deleting what's there and adding "%1" %*
(that's quote,%,one, quote, space,%,asterisk). Then you should be able to run your
AV program to see what that comes up with.

Please let us know what works.

Hi, Bob Sturtevant,
I've tried your solution and it worked at first instance.
Thanks a lot man.

hi folks.
i've faced the similer problem after installing norton av. but the file name was
differnt. xvmcxdirm.exe
either it was some virus that did that (which must've been on norton's installer
cd)
or the cause can be that i didn't restart my pc right after the installation of NAV.
the problem was that some how the default open command was changed and instead of
exe files being opened by windows shell. they were supposed to open by the junk exe
file which didn't exist.
as this isn't seem to be a random happening i guess there mite be some glitch in
norton's installer or something
never the less, Bob's solution is pritty niffty and easy to work
thanx bob :)

There was NOT a virus on the Norton install CD.
The virus (or trojan) was installed on YOUR PC.
When you ran NAV it detected and removed/quarantined the virus/trojan/worm BUT did
not correct the registry entry where it had placed a reference to it's exe file.
Thus, after the run you could no longer run anything.
BTW the file names are different because there are many virus/worm/trojans that just
generate a random file name.
If you ever see a missing file message or a reference to something that looks like
asefkieng, odds are excellent that you either were or are infected.

I have a similar occurrence here -- BUT... the "rename regedit.exe to regedit.com"
does NOT work. When we try to run regedit.com, it is recognized as being really
an .exe, and so therefore, it will not run at all.
How, then, to get into the registry to change the entry for exefile????
This occurred after infection with (Norton name) worm.AUTOMAT.AHD
