Question about 'What to do about error messages during Windows startup'

When I start my computer, 'Windows 98' logo comes on the screen and stays there for ever. Computer doesn't shut off. I have to power off the computer, restart and then it goes to safe mode. I have to ok it to start at Safe Mode , then shut off and restart & go to regular mode. Most of the times this works; sometimes same problem comes up.If I hit F8, then I get a message saying tooo many paramters and list of "set path" etc. How do I solve this problem so that I can get my computer starts properly?

You ask if a reinstall solves it? Wot if it doesnt? I am at an end trying to work out wot keeps causes reg checker to find this but have no idea. I was reinstalling everyday at one point until i disabled reg checker at startup. Could it be hardware? The onloy thing i had in was the hd and it still went. Tried everything new apart from psu, low wattage be a proba and cause this?

the problem here could be bcoz of too many parameters in the "set path" line in the autoexec.bat...what u could do is.. 1. when u boot 2. press F8....then the start up screen would pop up. 3. select the Command Prompt only option 4. then rename the "autoexec.bat" and "command.com" file... 5. ie. "C:>ren autoexec.bat autoexec.old" "C:>ren config.sys config.sys" 6. then restart ur computer and try... if this doesnt solve ur problem try 1. running scandisk and let it do the surface test 2. even if this doesnt solve the problem run " scanreg /fix " or "scanreg/repair" i dont remember which option it is...or simply run "scanreg.exe" if this doesnt solve ur problem...mail me

Windows 98 -
My computer will not allow me to do ANYTHING once it boots - then I get an illegal
operation that refers to Explorer when "details" is selected. Once I close the Illegal
Operation dialogue box I have a blank (colored) screen with no toolbars and no icons
on my desktop. How do I fix this? I have to turn off the computer and everytime I
turn it back on, the same thing happens. I am an amateur - but I need help!

Problem is mostly like a driver issue. If pc boots in Safe Mode and not Normal, you may have to detect what driver is causing the problem. If you have Mcafee virus Scan or other boot up software, uninstall in safe mode and the reinstall after normal boot up

Restart your computer. When your computer starts back up, hold down the f8 button. Select "command prompt only" Type "scanreg" click "view backups" select the OLDEST date. Hit "enter" hit YES Restart your computer

see if you have memclear.exe or clearmem.exe running (use crt-alt-del to check)
