Hold the power switch in for 4 seconds. The new ATX form factor motherboards were designed to power off automatically, a feature a lazy fella like me appreciates! :)

Yes it will! To be honest Bob, I wasn't sure how to answer this post since I assumed the user meant to shut it off with the switch when he had already gone "Start >> Shutdown" The only way I know to do that is enable APM in the BIOS (or disable it depending on what yours is set to first) and that doesn't always do the trick. To my way of thinking, using the switch to shut off your PC when you can have it shut off automatically is the equivalent of loading DOS on your brand new P4 machine........going backwards instead of moving ahead.

I probably should have put more thought into my reply, or shouldn't have bothered replying at all because I get frustrated with people who want to go backwards or stay static and tend to be sarcastic in my replies when I get in that mood.

Run the power management control panel app, and click on the Advanced tab at the top. At the bottom of the screen there's an option to choose what the OS does when you press the power button. That should work! Oh, and don't hold down the button for 4 seconds or so, as suggested by someone else.. that will not shut windows down properly. Keith

Can anyone tell me why my Windows '98 desktop PC no longer automatically shuts down? For years it did and now I get the annoying "It is now safe to turn off your computer" message. The Advanced Power Management thingy does not have any options for automatic shutdown -- just two options; one for showing the power meter on hte taskbar and one for prompting for password after standby. The weird thing is sometimes the computer DOES shut down automatically, but most of the time does not. This all came about after switching to cable ISP and installing a firewall (Tiny Personal Firewall). Any ideas? Thanks! Ileen

I have been reading several different opinions of others on how to do this. My question is my computer did shut down by itself until recently and then no longer would. I wrote to the forum and was told to change the apm which I did to no avail. I then was told to try holding the power button in for about 5-7 seconds and see what that does. It worked but my question is how can I get it back to shutting down on its own. I want this machine back to where it was when I bought it and can't seem to find the problem why it stopped shutting down by itself. Thanks. Debbi

There is a known issue with trying to shutdown windows 98SE and there is a patch at the microsoft website. The file is called 239887up.exe. Viruses can also cause this type of problem makesure your scanner is up to date.

Open your registry and find the key below. Create a new string value, or modify the existing value, called PowerdownAfterShutdown and set it to "1" to power off the computer at shutdown, or "0" to reboot. Restart Windows for the change to take effect, It Worked for me......

I got same problem with my ATX case. I have Gigabyte GA7VAX board w/AMD XP1900 CPU. It works perfectly fine on automatic shut down till I bought a nice new Logitech Wireless Duo Keyboard/Opticial Mouse. Now it won't automatically shut down. I noticed that after holding button for 4 second shutdown, system shut off completely except for Mouse/Keyboard wireless receiver still lit on. I decided to remove it and use old Cordless Logitech Keboard and Mouse. I powered it up and shut it down and it works the way it supposed to do, automatically shut off ATX system. It have NOTHING to do with BIOS settings (even tried disable Keyboard and Mouse "wake on" ) (also reflashed BIOS to newer version too, still no avail). I've done several ways but no luck with new Logitech Wireless Duo Keyboard/mouse. So Blames goes to Logitech for using "live power" function that prevent ATX power to shut down system completely. (Logitech cust. svc is lousy, no E-mail response!!) Could it be that a cheap 300 watt ATX power supply that came with $25 CPU case from computer store? I have not tried getting a more expensive power supply. Using Linux Mandrake 9.1 and Redhat 9.0 (two different hddr). It shut down the ATX system completely with Logitech Wireless Duo connected with no problem!!?? Sound like M$ have problem with it. (Hey! sorry for being in wrong Windows Forum cuz I'm using Win ME OS, not Win 98 but Win ME is like Win 98 3rd edition anyway so thought to throw in my experience with the ATX auto-shutoff) Last of all, if you have anything that you installed or plugged into ATX system. try take any hardware out and experiment to see any difference. If auto-shutoff works fine after removing hardware, Then that's the suspect.. Either exchange/replace hardware or put up and live with it if you love your new hardware. I don't shut off my system before bed. I left it running 24/7 except power black out :-) It won't do any harm anyway cuz I uses power saver on to turn off monitor and HDDR after 30 min (using Home/Office Desk in Screensaver "advance" setting) THANK You! :-)

even though i'm only 16, dont take what i say with a pinch of salt.

now. older (AT form factor) motherboards have to be switched off when Windows shuts
down. this effectively turns all power to the motherboard OFF.

newer (ATX form factor) motherboards have what is called "Soft-Power off". this is
where the machines motherboard still has power going to it when it looks as though
it is off. so technically, your PC is still on if you have an ATX pc. this enables
advantages such as Wake On LAN. (i use this at home) and Wake On RING (when someone
phones you). and of course, it enables you to turn off the pc without touching the
power switch.

so there is NO WAY of making an AT pc shut down on its own. some ATX pcs don't either,
as you need ACPI or APM BIOS to use the soft-off feature.

Yours was the best answer that I have seen yet. I had the same problem on a Win ME machine, and it ended up being the controller card that I put in for an IDE ZIP Drive. As to wether or not it was the ZIP or the card, I don't know yet. When I removed the card from my machine, it went back to shutting down by itself again. Now I need to find out how to make it work. Thanks.

I switched to cable, added yahoo messenger and msn messenger, added a new home page,
viewed some apple site with movie trailors, the next thing you know, I have all kinds
of ad-ware spybots. I cleansed my system which entails cleaning up the registry
and in the process I believe it removed the registry entry for power down. I believe
somewhere on the techtv screensavers site or the g4techtv site that there is a fix
for this problem and I am going there know to see what I can find.
