Question about 'Get Rid of the Logon Screen'

I have a question about Get Rid of the Logon Screen:

I have used all the suggested methods to remove the Logon Screen to no avail: i.e., choosing "Windows Logon"; changing the Logon Script in the registry; using Tweak UI to select "Log on automatically at system startup". I now get a screen that asks for a domain name? Has anyone solved this problem?

Which problem....the login screen or the domain? Here's my solution for removing the network logon screen and it works! I just used this last night on a customer's PC with no problem.

IRT getting the "domain Login" login screen, right click on the network neiborhood icon, and select properties. Double Click "Client for Microsoft networks" clear the checkbox next to logonto NT network domain.

I had the same problem. It was driving me crazy, but after 45 minutes
I figured it out.

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Network
highlight "Client for Microsoft Networks"
click properties button (which should unshadow)
Under logon validation: uncheck "Log on to Windows NT Domain"
Under Network Logon Options: check "Quick Logon"
Click OK

I solved this really easy! First you need to restore what they told you to do by changing the process logon script, then do what I did and posted on this site. Presto Bingo! No more logon screen

Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Network\ Click on Network to highlight it Export the registry file (Name it something like "Logon Backup") Now it is safe to delete all the branches under the Network key. You should have 2 folders, "Persistent" and "Recent" Once they are deleted, reboot the machine. Windows will either issue a logon screen with no user or pass. If it does this, then type in a username and no password, then click ok. Now you shouldn't have that annoying logon screen. If windows does not issue a logon screen after the reboot, then it worked as well. I hope that in conjunction with these other posts that you can accomplish this if you have some of the other mentioned problems. Like, "Logon To NT Domain", etc.. Have fun:-P

Try deleteing the .pwl files in the c:\windows directory, then restart. When you get the logon screen again make sure you give it at least a 3 letter name & leave the password blank, click ok. When you restart again it should log onto windows automatically

In our environment we logon to an NT domain using Microsoft Networking Client on our Win98 machines. For some reason when we switched a mixed Netware/NT to an exclusively NT domain network I began to get both the Windows logon window and the MS Networking logon window. What finally solved it was to change the settings for User Authentication/Logon in IE 6 Options-Security tab to "Prompt for User Name and Password" None of the remedies listed above worked.

Step 1- Click Start\Settings\Control Panel, and then double-click Network . Step 2- On the Configuration tab, click Windows Logon in the Primary Network Logon box, then click OK . Step 3- Do not Restart Computer if prompted! Click NO. Step 4- While still in control panel click Passwords Step 5- On the Change Passwords tab, click Change Windows Password , select any check box, then click OK NOTE : If you cancel the network logon dialog box when you start your computer, the Change Passwords tab may not be available. You must log on so that the Change Passwords tab is available. Step 6-In the Change Windows Password dialog box, type your current Windows password in the Old Password box. Leave the New Password and Confirm New Password boxes blank, (under user profiles tab select all users use same settings box) click OK , and then click OK Step 6- Exit Control Panel Step 7- Click Start\Search-Find, then click For Files or Folders Step 8- Type in *.pwl in the Named box, click Local Hard Drives in the Look in box, then hit ENTER Step 9- Right-click one of the .pwl files, click Rename , rename the file with an .old file extension. Repeat for each .pwl file. Step 10- Shut down and then restart your computer.

As soon as this happens go to the 'windows\sysbckup' directory look for the five
or more or less 'rbxxx.cab' files there and restore one of the more recent ones
following these main steps.
1. Create a directory in the 'windows' directory say called 'rb5'
2. Unzip the 'rbxxx.cab' file of your choice
to the 'rb5' directory
3. In explorer open the 'rb5' directory select all the
files and change the file attributes to 'archive' only
So that some are not 'hidden' and/or 'readonly'.
4. Go into 'regedit' and backup your current registry as you may want it back.
5. Now restart in MSDOS mode and 'cd' to the windows directory then change the attributes
of
sys.ini, user.dat and system.dat files by using the 'attrib' command as in: attrib
-h -r user.dat
6. Now you can copy all the files in the 'rb5' directory (there should be four: the
three mentioned and the file 'win.ini') since you are still in the 'windows' directory
just use 'copy rb5' that should copy all the files to your current directory which
is 'windows'.
7. Lastly restart the computer it's advisable to start up in 'safe mode' first then
exit and start up in normal mode.
Hope that the above steps may solve the problem if not you will just have to restore
the saved registry and restart your computer and find some other method.
