during bootup I see the message "windows cannot find the crystal chip" I have no sound I have tried uninstalling sound card etc ( crystal being the manufacturer of the sound card ) Soundblaster pro

Thanks Kevin But unsuccessful deleted sound card but could not find message still there at boot up, plus " new hardware found" ( unknown media device ) when tried to install this windows could not find drivers it ended up in unknown devices with bomb alongside it but when checked for conflicts windows reported no conflicts !!

Go to start/run and type msconfig it ok and look in the mscong ans autoexec.bat and remove any check marks that refer to your sound card. You might also check in the win.lini/widows and see if tere is anything in the load or ruin line. Usually these types of messages are result of an item not being uninstalled completely. If that fails..I would recommend that you try a utility called nbgegistry to clean up your registry. It can be found at this site:http://pandoram.da.ru/download.htm...there are other utilities available and are probably as god or maybe better. I use this tool at work and at home..at work everything is networked and at home it is a stand alone and I have never experienced any problems with this utility..Please (as always) back up your registry before making any changes...Good luck..

If you are getting unknown device at startup it means that you have not removed the sound card from the box. It also means that windows is searching for the right driver for it. Again you have to physically remove the card and have the correct drivers available. If you have removed the card and the message is still coming up it means one of two things: 1. you will have to remove the entry from the registry or 2. it is not the problem and another device is causing this error. You can, if you want, begin by removeing ALL devices from your system and readding them one by one to see which is causing the error. or remove all devices, re-install windows clean (reformat) and, once again, see which one is causing the error. hope this helps
