Question about 'How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?'

everytime I start windows 'scandisk.exe' starts up. I have tried everything I know
about windows to stop this (I have been using windows since 3.1, so I know a thing
or two about it) and it still dosen't work. I've tried 'msconfig' 'regedit' and the
startup folder and still no joy. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

have you ever let scandisk completely finish? it resets a flag when it gets done
so it won't start next time.

The problem your having isnt actually that windows is loading scandisk at startup.
This would explain why checking the registry, win.ini, and startup folder has failed
to produce a cure. Whenever your hard disk develops error, ie bad sectors, windows
will run scandisk each and every time your computer loads BEFORE windows is actually
loaded. There are 2 ways to remedy this. 1 is to let scandisk run thought its dos
based thorough scandisk, which while it takes a long time in dos, may save you a
headache in the long run. Your disk may very well be developing bad sectores and
they should be marked as to aviod losing data written to them. You may even consider
backing up your good data and purchasing a new hard drive. However, if your a fly
by the seat of your pants kinda person and throw caution to the wind, there is another
way to disable scandisk running altogether. At the run promt type msconfig and choose
the advanced option in the lower right hand corner. You'll be presented with a number
of dirrefent troubleshooting options in checkbox style. Half way down you will see
"disable scandisk after bad shutdown"...put a check in that box and goodbye blue
skies...err screens. Remember though...scandisk is actually there for your protection.

try editing msdos.sys with notepad but before that make sure its read-only property
is unchecked. change the value of "autoscan" to "0" (zero). and then make it a read-only
file again.

When you say that you tried msconfig, do you mean that you've tried clicking the
"advanced" button on the "general" tab, and then ticked the "disable scandisk after
bad shutdown" option, and you still have the problem?
