Question about 'When I choose

I have a question about When I choose "Shut Down" from the Start Menu, my computer hangs at the "Please Wait" screen:

I bought a second-hand Packard Bell (233 mhz) running Windows 98 2nd Ed. Found out when I got it home that it won't shut down. Stupid me. Hangs up on "Windows is shutting down.". There is no category "Windows/Shutdown" for a wave file in Control Panel/Sounds. Any body know about this?

Microsoft has a patch program to solve the shutdown problems on some machines.  Find it at their site, download it and install it according to their instructions.

There is a category "Exit Windows" in Sounds.  By default it has no sound assigned to it, but if you highlight it, you can assign a sound.  "Logoff.wav" might be a good choice.  If you don't have the "Jungle" "Musica" "Robotz" and "Utopia" theme sets of sounds showing as choices, you can add them from your Win98 CD using Start/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Windows Setup.

You mean that there is no "Exit Windows" .wav file?

Basically, this is an issue in the Windows registry. The best way to correct this problem is by going to the Microsoft website and getting all necessary critical updates.

Regarding no "windows shutdown" in sounds: The shutdown sound is named EXIT WINDOWS in Win 98

We've had this problem for years and our only solution is to choose to reboot in MS-DOS instead of shut down, then manually press the button on the tower to switch it off. Takes a couple of extra seconds, but works reliably and avoids having to use scandisk on restart.

I'm having a similar problem except my computer stalls with a black screen. When I hit reset and it goes back into start-up mode a big red box appears: NAV Auto-Protect - Unable to determine the location of the configuration files...[Ok] at bottm left allows me to close this window by typing "O". As the computer continues to restart and reaches the desktop an Error Message Box appears: NAVAPW32 caused an invalid page fault in module APWCMD.DLL at 0197:0041732b. Once I close this box start-up completes and I can use the computer normally. However, when I go to Start then Shut Down it freezes with a black screen. HELP!
