Windows Protection Error
Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 7:35 am Posted by Frank Culver
(3 messages posted)
I loaded an aftermarket virus protection program from the internet. I then "uninstalled"
the program, and now windows 98 will not start, ceasing with "windows protection
error - restart your computer" displaying. '98 will start in safe mode, and I did
re-load '98 from the recovery disc and CD, but the error message remains. What can
I try?
Thanks
Frank

Hi Frank,
Would this aftermarket virus protection program happen to be from McAfee? If so,
I'm here for the same damn reason!

Hi, Hugh...
No, it was another one... something like GLProtect, or something like that. We
use McAffee here at work, and it seems to work well. I've tried everything to get
my home machine back to working order.... I hope someone has a solution. I'm not
too computer savvy.

Hi Frank,
I installed McAfee because I was having some problems booting, etc. and I thought
I might be suffering from a virus.
After installing the protection software it seemed like the program sucked the life
out of my machine. Suddenly everything got real slow. So I uninstalled.
You might have a problem with a driver conflict, etc.
Look up ASD in your windows help file. Are you running Win98SE or above?

both of you:
restart and hold down the ctrl key until you see the win98 startup menu ... select
the confirmation option. this will allow you to selectively load drivers,
etc on startup. watch carefully and hit n for anything that looks related
to the virus scanner, the rest you can hit 'y' for. does windows load properly? report
back.
hugh:
what slowed down your system was mcafee's active protection, which can be disabled.

Hi, I got similar problem last time but not sure whether you can apply the method
I tried to solve last time for my pc. Go to command prompt and type "edit c:\windows\system\config.sys"
for editing configuration file. When config window is out, type " DOS=High,UMB Device=
C:\Windows\EMM386.exe Noems DEVICE=C:\Windows\HIMEM.SYS"
Hope you can start computer with no error...

I've been currently dealing with this problem specifically with my uncle's computer
and what it has turned out to be is a hardware conflict with some aftermarket RAM
he purchased. In your case however, with a demo for an antivirus program it sounds
like a driver conflict.
I generally search windows error's in Yahoo....the following fix is from a
link to Microsofts website with some solutions because it is a known bug....I'll
cut and paste what I found and give you a link as well.

How come the chain stopped? I am also having similar problems. I am using the enterprise
Mcafee solution. Only computers that are having problem are "some" Dell GX200.
I am only speculating that it has to do with the chip set changes that happened a
few times on the GX200 model.
I nailed it down to Mcafee/Chipset related issue. When I disable Mcafee from startup...
no reg error message. So why do I think it's also the chipset? Because out of 500
computers, 100 of them are GX200 Dells and only 35 of them are giving reg error messages
which makes sense because the GX200s changed their chipset a few times.
I will try to update any chipset patches and see if this resolves it. I will report
back.
But the weird thing is that, the reg error occurs almost at random times after startup.

I was having a similiar problem with my system and I found a solution to my problem.
My problem was, that I was running the latest PHP and Apache on my win98 box. PHP
instructed me to throw its DLL's all around the Windows/system directory etc. I
thought I'd be smart, and simply add ALL the sub-folders into the PATH statement
into my Autoexec.bat.
Didn't think anything about it...next time I rebooted (day later) I got the Windows
Protection errors...
Solution: Commented the path statements out...and voila. If you are having problems
with Mcafee, my solution would be to uninstall the program and MAKE sure that it
is commented out (use REM in front of the command) completely of your autoexec.bat
and config.sys.

This problem is much worse. I am running a AMD K6-2 and after installing V-com's
pc upgrade program, the same problem occurred. I fixed it by disabling the power
save stuff at start up and that fixed it. Tonight I installed Studio 400, and the
problem is back. MS has pages and pages of information about the problem.
I do have McAffee installed.

Wondering if my prob. is the same. I get the same message at boot. If I get rid
of the startup screen, I get some weird colors at various places, and if I step by
step, it freezes at the end, when windows tries to load, again with random colors.
I tried to re-install windows, and got the message "incompatable version, can not
proceed." ARGH I wanna just reformat but I bought the computer used, and I can't
seem to get video drivers off the hard drive, or the 'net for that matter.......Is
it McAffe causing this monstrosity? Please help if anyone here manages to fix their

We too have Optiplex GXi P200MMXs & the Windows Protection Error. I was able to
fix this issue last year and it have crept in again over a week ago. I can't remember
how i fixed it as i was just exhausted with hours or re-configuring.
Mine is due to a D-Link NIC required by my ISO for DSL Service...
Once TCP/IP is loaded it bombs on reboot.

I received this error just 2 days ago. Upon booting received lock up status receiving
message "CONMG: Windows Protection mother f*cking Error. Restart Windows."
Do this first! Error occurred on laptop with W98, a Winbook, not important.
LOOK to see if while booting your computer consistently checks memory, and if it
is correct!
I noticed it OCCASIONALLY checked memory, and then incorrect at times...Here I received
suggestion of memory problem...AND I HAVE installed memory maxxing it out from EBAY
several months past....
THE MEMORY WAS NOT SEATED PROPERLY!!
Remove or replace memory with kown good memory chip...if works, systematically take
the old memory and find a very large hammer and walking to nearest concrete surfacebeat
the living hell out of it!
IF these solutions do not work, goto Microsoft site listed in a thread herein and
follow suggestions...
The other issue from known past experience is corrupt system registry...REPLACE with
old registry file or new one altogether.
Use MSCONFIG to systematically check all start up programs for faults, REM out all
virus program lines in autoexec and config sys and anywhere else for that matter.
Run MSCONFIG and deselect Debug Manager.
MS CONFIG HAS SOLVED MY PAST PROBLEMS.
MCAFEE SECOND MOST PREVELANT PROBLEM.
In Safe Mode (as this is only way to enter windows environment) right click my computer,
properties, then double click related items such as video , controllers of sorts
for games, etc. and REMOVE CHECK FROM box below deactivating item....dont worry about
remembering WHAT you checked as will when reentering show you WHAT is not functioning
by "!" along side item.
Anyway, if your system boots properly, systematically remove an item one at time
until does not boot properly.....this is problem...
THIS is liste within Windows help section for troubleshooting....
Last ATTEMPT,,,,, reformat hard drive reinstall Windows....
IF YOU DID ALL OF THIS FIRST, VERY SORRY, BUT CHECK MEMORY FIRST!!!!! AS DOING ALL
OF THIS WILL NOT SOLVE PROBLEM.......
AND WHETHER MEMORY REGISTER CORRECTLY OR NOT, THIS APPARENTLY WILL STILL CAUSE THIS
ERROR IF MEMORY IN SOME OTHER WAY FAULTY OR NOT SEATED PROPERLY ETC....
Thanks for all help seen here...Everyones thoughts and suggestions VERY appreciated..

Not sure how other solved their problem...my came up out of the blue...did not install
anything new, just shut down one day and poof, blue screen of death.
Could get in via Safe Mode and sued the normally useless Dell Support tutorial (why
the give you online links in Safe Mode when you computer cannot use the Internet
in Safe Mode is beyond me). Any way I just replaced the system registry with a version
from 3 or 4 days earlier using my Windows Safe Disk (find out how to create one and
then boot your computer from that). Reboot the computer WITHOUT CD support. This
will bring you to a DOS prompt A:. Type "c:", then "cd windows\command", then "scanreg.exe

files. Then select a system registry file from a few days before the problem occured.
My PC came up no problem...not sure if the problem will reoccur or not. PLEASE make

I haven't done anything to my computer either. I typically leave it on running Kazaa
over night and while I'm away from home to download different things. During the
course of a day, it might crash ten times, or not at all. This one particular time,
it crashed and didn't reboot (which also happens sometimes). When I woke and rebooted
the computer this morning, it came up with that damn blue screen saying "Windows
Protection Error. System Halted. Please Reboot." Rebooting does not work and I
can only access Windows ME (which I'm using as an OS) through the safe mode. I did
not install or uninstall anything. I did not remove or add any new hardware. I
was merely downloading while I slept.
Kazaa in itself crashes all of the time, but completely unpredictably. It might
have something to do with Kazaa, but it might not. Anyone have any ideas???? Thank
you.

The timing calibration code in the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS)
driver causes a divide by zero if the CPU runs at 2.2 GHz or faster. This problem
does not occur with CPUs that run at 2.1 GHz or slower. Detail solution that you
can contact with Microsoft for the following URL.

This might not neccessary occur with the software only but as metioned by others
drivers...So all you have to do is to remove the system battery or cmos battery then
reinstall widows98 and biggo!! everything goes back to normal.

(rolls eyes). Got solved the way Garry suggested. Thanks! i Do hope this won't occur

Suggest you state more details of your problem in a new thread (not the one you used
which is 2 years old). Windows Protection Error can be due to many things so it
is necessary for you to describe when the error appears, what program you were running,
and details of your hardware may help.

The blue-screen problem happened to me today, the way it happened is closest to Nathan's
problem. I was running a software to play games on-line, I went out of my room for
a few minutes, because I was was waiting for someone to join me in one of the games.
When I came back, my computer locked-up, (the mouse pointer still worked, and I could
still highlight and dehighlight the program's window, but nothing else worked) I
wasn't worried since it already happened to me a few times, so I had no other choice
but to Shut Down. After that, Windows ME started normally, but after it finished
with all the loading on the Desktop, the blue-screen suddenly came up (it was the
one that shows up all the time, mostly when I'm on-line, just like for any other
Windows ME users) the blue-screen on start-up did happen to me a couple of times
before in the last few weeks. I tried pressing Esc (to try to get out of it so I
wouldn't have to turn off my computer), the blue-screen showed up again and again
3 times right after pressing Esc, but after the 3rd time it finally returned to Desktop.
I tried to run a program (from Start), and the blue-screen showed up again with the
same error message as the one before, I pressed Esc once and the blue-screen disappeared,
I tried another program, and the same thing happened (blue-screen came up), then
I realaised that anything I try to run, the blue screen comes up. This was just too
weird, so I Restarted my PC from the Start\Shut Down menu. When my PC rebooted, the
new blue-screen came up saying "Windows Protection Error - Please Restart Your Computer.
System Halted.". That's how it happened... I can still access Windows ME on Safe
Mode, but I can't access it as normal, since that blue-screen shows up all the time
and freezing my PC!

Please redirect to http://www.vandorp.info as the url below is not working anymore.
Follow the link on the bottom of the page to the archive items. Here you'll find
the NDIS patch for Win98 on machines with a faster than 2.1GHz processor. (Zip file!
no executable to prevent some AV-programs to act up. Install Windows. Satr in safe
mode. Install an unzipper like WinZip and unzip. Now apply patch and restart)

start your computer up pressin ctrl when you get to the windows 98 start-up select
"comand prompt only" at the promt tyep in cd \windows\command then type format. then
after the drive has been formated you can reinstall windows. hopefully this should
work, but it will erase your hardrive of all programs, exept those on the Windows
disk
you can also do the format useing the Windows Boot-Disk. at the promt type in format

I'm not sure exactly how to fix what is causing the protection error but I can tell
you how to restore your registry to it's state prior to this error occurring. At
boot hit F8 to get to the boot menu, select Command Prompt Only, at the prompt type
'Scanreg /restore' You will get a blue DOS box prompting you to select a registry
to restore from a previous date - pick one prior to your first encounter with the
protection error. restore & restart.
Happy Trails

Could this be an AGP issue? Has anyone had a similar problem or does anyone know

It seems that the problem caused by your motherboard. Have u lately installed a new
hardware?? Sometimes some motheboard has a limitation although it's not written in
the manual book. If u are installed a new hardware to ur motherboard try to uninstall
it, then run ur windows, n see if the problem still occured. If there is no problem
anymore then ur motherboard is not capable handling the new hardware (there is nothing
wrong with ur new hardware). But if the problem still occured it means that ur windows
registry has already messed up, try to replace it with ur back up (if exist). Don't
forget to check ur bios setting, is there any change lately to its setting before
the problem occured. From my experience with this problem (i have deal with this
kind of problem 2 - 3 times) the main cause of this problem is windows registry problem,
bios setting problem, n the last (the trickiest) hardware problem, it can be one
of them so be sure to check it one by one. I hope this can help solve the problem,
thanks

I recently had the same experience with this error code and read all of these responses.
Nothing I did could correct the problem. I ran scandisk from the safemode, had my
norton systemworks check the HD that showed no problems, ran every utility I could
find basically to no avail. But what I had done recently was to install a new modem,
a cheap one at that. I removed the drivers for the modem and still the same error
message. No diagnostic would solve this problem. So I removed the new modem and got
back into Windows(98) and was back in business. I believe this modem to be faulty.
So my thinking is that even if you have not installed a modem lately, maybe yours
has gone bad. A long shot I admit, but a possibility considering none of these other
solutions may have worked. At least you have something to work with. Maybe another
piece of hardware?
Sincerely,

Anyone know if BIOS changes can cause this? ie switching to best performance defaults.

This has just happened to me, and I did a search to see if anyone else had experienced
it.
This came out of the blue, I hadn't installed anything for ages.
Luckily I did remember updating my Video Card drivers about a month ago.
So acting on a hunch, I un-installed them in Safe mode, then re-installed the Original
drivers (not the updated ones). This solved the problem.
Maybe other people should revert back to their supplied or older drivers to see off
this nasty little problem.

The message may be some other hardware (possibly something other than a modem)
I'm getting this error, but my problem is caused by a removeable (modular) Hard Drive.
When the HD is in I get the error (unless I'm in safe mode - then I can see the drive
ok).

Boy, this thread goes on for YEARS! Ok, me too. Win98SE started BSOD's with VxD
errors and bad restarts, then deteriorated into Win Prot Err. After exhausing Norton,
Rescue, etc. reinstalled Win98SE and STILL the WPE's --reinstalled again --and again
--and again! Would start in SafeMode, but no bananas running all the standard "fixes".
Then I looked in Start/Settings/ControlPanel/System/DeviceManager and expanded each
catagory to see that there were two, three, four, five duplicated listings for installed
devices of which there should only be one. Removed all the duplicates, triplicates,
quadruplicates and quintuplets, the video card and USB scanner and Restarted --Windows
loaded the s/w for the video card, then the USB scanner and HEAVEN! No more WPE's
for two weeks now....... Hope you have the same luck!
I did look at the M$ URL suggested, but they are just as confused as I was and expect
one to be able to find information NOT available even in SafeMode......

For some reason, Windows 98 seems to hold onto the old video card software. This
also happens when you change the motherboard on a computer. It'll tell you it found
new devices and assign drivers to them. However, some of the other devices in the
old motherboard may be improperly assigned to the new devices in the new motherboard,
which I feel is why this error happens.
The only way I know how to fix this is to delete the Windows 98 directory, and do
a fresh install of Win 98.
You'll have to reinstall some software, and some software will require you to buy
a new license as the old license was assigned to the old motherboard. But then you
should not have any problems with anything.

I had the same problem with a computer that I was doing a service call on. I was
scratching my head for hours. It turned out that my client bought a new stick of
256Mb PC-133 AZENRAM. This was causing the windows protection fault. I didn't even
think to check the RAM because I was convinced that it was one of the 6 virii that
was on his system.......or it could be that it's 3AM and I have to work 2 jobs tomorrow...meh
hope this will help a bit :)

in regards to a windows protection error that occuredd after mcafee antivirus version
5.16 was uninstalled, i tried numerous ways to run windows 98 without success.
the only way u can run windows is through safe mode when this error occurs. there
fore u are unable to use CD Rom support and load files from the win98 setup disk.
to normally run win98 with CD Rom support, boot the computer to the windows startup
menu (normal, logged, safe mode)
when here, select step by step confirmation. type Y to every question UNTIL u come
to load windows drivers.
here u will still type Y, but this will bring up a list of windows drivers that u
either want to load or not load. to each of the drivers type N. this will allow windows
to load normally, not in safe mode, but with out the normal windows drivers loading
aswell.
When windows is loaded, open the system file checker
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System INformation.
on the tools menu select System File Checker
run a scan to check if any files are corrupt, missing, damaged etc. system file checker
(SFC) may create a terminal error,(this programs has caused an invalid ....etc)
in SFC, replaced the files - SFC.exe(this is the system file checker) and the file
KRNL386.exe.
i found by replacing this files, my computer booted normally after shut down. i CANNOT
guarentee that this will work but it luckily worked for me. any question if i can
help, email black_adder_96@hotmail.com. happy computing and error free times.

I don't know about anyone else, but I can rarely understand much of what they say
in those Microsoft solutions! I end up clicking on Q-this link and Q-that link for
further information and end up more confused than I was when I first went on there!
Like someone else on here mentioned, I printed out one solution once and tried to
follow every step to the letter - and I ended up with a worse problem than I'd started
with! No doubt they're very helpful for techies and the like. But I find them totally
useless 99% of the time!
As for the Windows Protection error on start-up: As someone has pointed out, you
can't access the internet in safe-mode. So unless you have access to another computer
and printer, and can find any good tips anywhere on how to resolve the situation,
you're stuffed basically! And as you don't have access to your CD-ROM, you can't
back-up all your recently created files either - because most of them won't fit onto
a floppy, even if you condense it. Fortunately, I'm usually fairly up-to-date with
my backups, so I didn't lose much last time this happened to me.
I bought a Microsoft Help Desk book for Windows 98, thinking it would help me resolve
most common problems. But does it heck! Just like Microsoft's site, it doesn't explain
steps clearly enough for an amateur to follow successfully. It just tells you to
do something, but doesn't tell you exactly how to do it - which is useless unless
you are some kind of techie and know the ins and outs of your computer in fine detail!
Even some of the solutions mentioned by some in this string seem to assume that others
have a greater knowledge of PC's than they really have. I know this is no help to
anyone regarding their Protection Errors. It's just an observation I thought I'd
share in the hope that others might remember that some of us are much less computer
savvy than they obviously are - and make their instructions simpler for a novice
to follow!
Sorry if I've taken up too much space or wasted everyone's time. But maybe it will
help people realise that they are not alone if they find solutions hard to follow
sometimes?

Thankfully this is a common problem unlike the last one I had, which might have been
nearly one of a kind.
The scanreg solution seems to work flawlessly and thanks goes to whoever discovered
this solution.
You don't need to do /restore, you can just type the scanreg, then you'll eventually
have a choice of restoring a backup if it finds no errors on your registry.

wrong, but this time welll i guess im not so lucky, anyway once the download finished,
i had to restart to make the drivers effective, but once i restarted it, and windows
tried to start up i get a message "windows protection error, u need to restart windows."

zonealarm (free fire wall that i have been useing for eons it seems) and i got a
message stating that i need to reinstal windows, im wondering A how can i reinstall
windows from a cd when i cant get my cd drive to open in safe mode, and B how to

I just found out that BIOS changes can cause this, yes. Using an M571 PCChips motherboard,
I had set my video memory from 1m to 4m in an attempt to get a new PCI video card
installed. I then removed the PCI card and drivers and re-applied the onboard video
drivers and began getting Windows Protection Errors and other display anomalies.
Changing the video memory back to 1m corrected this.

Great advice - prevented a major emotional experience in my house (the thought of
reinstalling Windows and losing all my/my wife's files). Did the boot from disk
& restored the Registry & SHAZAM! - all is well again on the reboot.
Thanks a lot - glad I found this thread. Ya'll have a Merry Christmas
