First off go to Control Panel via
 Start -> Settings ->Control Panel.

In Control Panel double click the "Sounds and MultiMedia" icon.

In the "S and M" properties window, uncheck the box the reads "Show volume control
in the taskbar".

That is it, the icon should disapear forever, (or untill you bring it back) no reboot
required or anything like that.

Hope this helps
