an fdisk sets up the partitions on a system, a format sets up the hard drive files.
and yes, a format will wipe out all the files on the drive being formatted, you need
to be aware of that consequence. once the format has been done on the C drive, for
example, then you can reload the operating system. you will need device drivers
and the product key. ensure that you have both available before you start. you can
find the product key in the registry, START, RUN, REGEDIT and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion. find the productkey
and copy it down for later use when re-installing windows. good luck, Al
