My problem is very similar. My monitor will go black with a lone flashing cursor in the upper left hand corner and my CPU will stay on. The only thing I can do at this point is a cold shutdown causing it to go into scandisk at startup because it did not shut down properly. Plus, I am using cable modem, not DSL.
