My problem is very similar. My monitor will stay on, along with the fan, but no cursor,
just a redish black screen. I am also using cable modem but I did have DSL installed
before that! The thing that really gets me is that it doesn't do it every time! Also
when scan disk starts upon startup, It keeps restarting and most of the time it never
finishes scanning. The only way I have found to get it to scan complete on startup
is to un-plug my cable modem. There have been a few times that scan disk will find
an error in boot, with the modem on, but, if you are not there to click "OK" right
away it will tell you it has to scan again because windows has written to the drive.
The second scan I have not had a problem with.
