The virus had associated itself so that any program run would also run the infected file. If you know the name of the virus, you should see if a removal tool is available. Try http://www.symantec.com/ and search for the type of virus it was. This tool would not only remove the virus, but also repair the registry. Failing that, a overtop install may also fix the problem.
