OK, finally got it uninstalled.
Instructions by Steveo did not work for me on XP - at first I thought they did -
dialog boxes popped up saying I had successfully rolled back to previously installed
version of Media Player, but it wasn't there, and it couldn't be re-installed.
What worked was what Microsoft recommended (puzzling, but true): Open Help and Support,
search for System Restore, and select "Run the System Restore Wizard". Select "Restore
my computer to an earlier time" and click 'next'. Look for the restore point "Installed
Windows Media Player 9 Series", select it and click next. Follow few simple steps
from there.
