Thank you for clearing up this question for me.

Awhile back I read on a website that renaming the file extension of AUTOEXEC.BAT 
would speed up some programs/functions.  I followed this advice and following a restart 
programs such as Outlook Express, Word, Works, Home Publishing 2000,Phone Tools, 
etc. would open and run incredibly faster.  (But only after the first time they were 
opened.)  

After reading your response to my querry I again renamed this file extension and 
after restarting these programs were were opening/running much faster (after the 
first go-round.)

I don't mean to second guess.  And I'm definately not particularly bright when it 
comes to the "guts" and "innerworkings" of this handy little machine.  Perhaps it 
just doesn't work all systems.

Incidentally, the same web site said it was alwright to get rid of AUTOEXEC.BAK as 
this file was only necessary for Zerox scanners/printers.  Unfortunately, after getting 
rid of it I learned it was also necessary for my Visioneer 8100 scanner.
