A little more expensive, but better way around the problem for all systems, is
to buy a good router (like the Linksys BEFSR41 - $50 or less at Best Buy). They have
a built-in inbound Firewall (a little better than the in-bound Firewall in Windows
XP). Or even go with a wi-fi router.
Good Routers have the PPPoE logon option built in. You give the router the user
ID and the password, and it does the signon and keeps the link active as long as
it is powered on. You then set you system to get its DCHP assigned IP address from
the router. And IE and all programs use TCP/IP through the network card to access
the Internet.
Once setup this way, the Ethernet 300 software is no longer needed. This even
works with AOL systems. The big advantage is when you want to hook up a second system.
Just plug it into the router through a Network port and you can share the IP address.
