Hi Stan,
I've never tried this, so I can't say whether it will work or not...but we are
now in a desperate situation by the sound of it...
Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Choose a Restore
Point from the calendar to restore the system to.
This will probably restore the fault again, but your emails should be back (hopefully).
OE stores folders with .dbx extension. So after you're restored the system, go to
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{XXX}\Microsoft\Outlook Express (where "{XXX}"
represents your unique identity) and then make a copy of all the files that you want
to keep.
If there are no files there with a ".dbx" extension, create a boot floppy via Start
> Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Startup Disk (tab) > Create Disk
(button). Leave the floppy in the drive and reboot. Choose to Start the machine
without CDROM support when you get the menu. At the A: prompt, type "Scanreg /Restore"
and hit Enter. Choose a date from the menu before you deleted the Identity file.
It's best not to rely too much on OE folders as a means of storing important mails
though. You can drag and drop emails into a folder you create somewhere on your hard
drive, or on a floppy disk. Windows will save them with an ".eml" extension. If you
double click any of those, they will open in OE automatically.
