Start by going to the System Tools menu and run Disk CleanUp utility. Run
it one time and make sure all items have check marks in their selection boxes. Then
run it a second time and select the "Download Program Files" line, and click VIEW
button. Manually select and delete all the Icon/programs shown. Then exit and complete
the run of Disk CleanUP.
Then go to Internet Explorer, Tools button, Internet Options line. Under "Temporary
Internet files, select the "Delete Files.." button and delete all the internet temp
files.
Next delete all of your System Restore files by Disabling System Restore. While
you have it disabled, run a full DEFRAG of the drive and then Enable it again. (reboots).
Next go to this site and get the DELINDEX.BAT clean up tool. Follow
the sites direction on booting from a Windows ME boot diskette and running the clean
up program. It will get rid of a lot of things that can not be done while Windows
ME is running. It also removes all cookies so you may want to save any web site passwords
you use.
Last, work through Windows ME Fixes to clean
up the system so it runs better. Remember to run the DelIndex process again after
doing all the items listed.
This should free up a lot of your disk space, lost to junk and temp files that
are not needed but never removed. The most likely problem you are having right now
is that the System Restore files (hidden) are corrupted. They do not show up in the
"used" space, but are part of the "free space", as they should be deleted when the
system needs the disk space. But if corrupted, they are sometimes not deleted an
have to be manually removed by Disabling and then Enabling System Restore.
