Good advice from Jack, but I note that the HDD is less than 6GB. It depends really on what you use the machine for and how much RAM you have installed. If you use Windows Movie Maker for example, you need 2GB of disk space just for that alone.
If you only have a small amount of RAM, say 64MB, then Windows will require a larger "Swap File" when it gets low on memory. The "Swap File" is the free space on your hard drive where Windows places the Swap File which itself is a slower form of system memory (RAM). You mentioned using Norton. That eats up more space. Same goes for anything else you have installed.

I suspect what's happening here is that Windows needs the rest of the disk space you've got left for the "Swap File" because without that space, it will crash.
