Hi Gary,
First and foremost, make sure that these "txt" files are just that and not a
virus in disguise. The problem with viruses these days is that they can be disguised
as innocent looking image or text files. Even if you have Windows configured to show
extensions, it only displays the first three characters after the ".". So a virus
can be disguised as "friend.txt" when in fact it is "friend.txt.vbs". You just won't
see the ".vbs" extension. So when you open it, you install the virus. It's therefore
vital to make sure the files and their source are geniune.
But to deal with your question. The safest thing to do put the files on your the
desktop for closer examination. You do that by clicking the file once with the right
mouse button and choosing "Copy" from the menu. Go to the desktop, right
click again and choose "Paste" from the menu. To make sure it is a Text file, right
click it again and choose "Open with" from the menu and choose to open it with "Notepad".
Once you're satisfied that the file is what it's supposed to be, right click
it again and choose "Send to" > "3½ Floppy" from the menu. Make sure there's a floppy
disk in the drive before you do that of course.
Some useful info on the subject of viruses and the like here.
