Would setting the attribute to Hidden fix it? On Windows 98SE, setting a desktop icon to Hidden hides it from the desktop, although it doesn't delete it. I don't have access to WinME at the moment, but I would think the same thing would work as long as Explorer is set up not to show hidden files.

You could try right-clicking the icon, choosing Properties, going to the General tab, and checking the Hidden checkbox. Click OK, and press F5. Does that work? The icon should disappear. Technically it's still there, it's just not shown. If that works, it might help at least until a real fix is available.
