I doubt that your computer is broken. Go into control panel/system/device manager
and check if the floppy is being recognized. There should not be a yellow "X" next
to the device. Look in disk drives and highlight the generic floppy line and click
properties below. The box that comes up should say there are no problems and the
device is working ok. Click on the settings page and make sure that the "disconnect"
in the options box is not checked. While you are in device manager, also check the
floppy disk controllers listing (standard floppy disk controller). There will not
be a settings page but check the general and resources page. Oh, I forgot to mention
to check that this device is enabled on the bottom of the general page. It is possible
that the bios is not recognizing the floppy drive but unlikely if it was working
all along. A new floppy drive can be bought for 20$ or so, I bought a new one for
11$. If you can put it in or have it done somewhere I would swap it out. I've put
three in my machine already, they don't last that long under a lot of usage. Hope
this helps.
