Hi Laura,
This error is most likely caused by the absence of a USB 2.0 port on your machine.
When Win ME was launched, the USB 2.0 technology hadn't been invented yet and if
your machine dates from 2001, then that's the most likely cause of the problem.
If on the other hand, you have got a USB 2.0 port, then the problem could be
the cable. HP doesn't supply USB 2.0 cables (or at least they don't in Europe) and
you have to purchase one separately. You should be able to pick one up in your local
PC store.
If you haven't got a USB 2.0 port, you can purchase a USB PCI expansion card
for about $30. Make sure you only buy one that has a USB 2.0 installation CD with
it. You can buy one online from here
if your local PC store hasn't got one. It's also best to buy one with at least
four ports. Although you can connect up to 128 devices to a single port by piggybacking
them on to each other, you'll need hubs in between if you've only got one port on
the card.
If you're unsure whether your machine has USB 2.0 or only USB 1.1, post the make
and model of the machine here and I'll check it out for you.
