Check the Sound, games and multimedia section in Device Manager. If there is no audio device listed, then your sound adapter may have gone bad. Or if built into the system board, disabled in BIOS.

If it is listed with an error indication, select the line, select Remove and reboot the system. If the adapter is OK, it will find it again and install its drivers again.
