Dear Sir: Aimless browsing brought me to your September 5th, 2002 technical puzzle posted at this site. In case a clear answer was never received to the question, do allow me to explain the resulting lockup or freeze caused by incoming calls to your idle PC. First of all, keep in mind that system freezes are also common in the most stable computer system configuartions , mainly because of: 1) unexpected software or hardware operation interrupts; 2) software address or hardware device address access conflicts. It must also be said that even any other version of Windows between 95 and ME would have exhibitted the freeze symptom caused by incomming calls to your Windows ME-based PC. The reason this freeze occurs is because many modern modems (PCI HCF, HSF, WinModem) are in constant dialogue with the PC system bus, even when supposedly idle. On incomming calls, the modem responds by sending a signal to the bus which the system did not expect. Therefore, with no intelligent software response or trap for handling the modem response signal, your system freezes. You can easily prove this by experimentally engaging the modem to receive incomming calls with a messaging program. The messaging program will contain the intelligence to engage the modem and process its responses. Some remedies in your grasp might include: (1) disabling the 'wake on ring' feature for your modem in the system BIOS, if provided. 2) update your modem driver to one that idles the modem when not in direct use; 3) upgrade your Windows operating system to the more intelligent NT, 2000 or XP products. And there is your answer, Sir, over one year later, from an uninvolved stranger passing by. Goodnight! Sincerely, HLA.
