Thank you! I had finally managed to hunt down and kill all the annoying little .exe
files that were causing problems on my ME machine (interesting that it is plaguing
ME and not others?) I had bascially defanged whatever this is, but couldn't get
the .lnk stuff to go away. I had missed one startup directory apparently.

So here's what I ended up doing.

CTRL-ALT-DEL
Kill a task that has called "(some random garbage).exe" like 93kr3223.exe

select run from the start menu. type regedit.

Hit Ctrl-F and search for "runonce"

Right above that folder is a "run" folder these are files that get run every time
you start windows. You'll find that same "(random garbage).exe" located there.

Delete it.

Go to you startup directory and clean out all the .lnk files.

You'll see a bunch of various "(random garbage).exe" files all about 570K in size. Those need to go too. I dumped system restore just to be safe. Ran Ad-aware and Norton Anti-Virus. Seem to be running clean. Thanks for the tip on getting rid of the .lnk files, was driving me nuts.
