I hjust read Betty's reply and wondered if you have added a whole bunch of RAM at
the same time as you increased the disk size? If so you will be getting problems
with the vcache if you go to 512Mb or over. Some systems do and some don't get this
problem. If the video memory is inclusive you don't get the problem if the video
memory is exclusive (on the video card) you can get a problem as the total memory
is 512Mb plus whatever you have on the video card.
If this is the case you can take one module out (assuming that you have more than
one) and alter the vcache settings, shut-down, and put it back in.
Or you can open msconfig Advanced settings, and set the memory limit to whatever
you want it to be.
Putting a check-mark in the memory setting will remove the grey in the window so
you can alter the setting.
OR it may be that your swap-file is either corrupt and/or is not generating properly
when Windows needs it. If you can get into the control panel System, Performance,
Virtual memory you can set a permanent 1000Mb Min & Max to give a 1024Mb swap-file
ON the drive.
Alternatively you can delete your existing swap-file from a bootdiskette DOS prompt
and then re-boot to see if the old one was corrupt. (I think I mentioned the possibility
of re-introducing a virus if there is one on your existing bootdisk.)
To delete the swap-file:
A:\>DEL C:\WINDOWS\WIN386.SWP , and press Enter. or, as it is sometimes on the root
of C:
A:\>DEL C:\WIN386.SWP
SWAP-FILE WIN386.SWP
"I guess I will have to break it down and take it to the shop. My guess he will have
to use a 10 GB HD to stabilize the system to update the BIOS and then replace my
20 GB to see if it works."
You may be right. We'll see. ;-)
