New Hardware Wizard keeps running

My VAIO laptop running Me suddenly decided to run the "New Hardware Wizard" every
time I try to boot. Cancelling or hitting "finish" simply leaves a grey rectangle
and hung computer. Won't go any further. First happened when I tried to boot using
a wireless networking card that had worked fine previously. Will not boot in safe
mode - that simply puts the "safe mode" logo in the corners of the blank grey rectangle.
Any suggestions on how to clear this glitch and get me booted up again would be very
appreciated!
