Tip: Boot from Window ME Startup diskette again. Then at the A:\ prompt, first enter SMARTDRV to load the DOS disk cache program. Then try the DELTREE C:\_RESTORE command again. It should run a lot faster with DOS disk cache enabled.

By chance, are you running AOL on that system? AOL has a number of work files that it sometimes updates with "program trace" information, that just happens to be files that get backed up into System Restore for every update.

It is not normal for these programs to remain and build up like that in the System Restore area, unless there is a problem with *STATEMGR not running. Check the TASK LIST and make sure it is running and that *STATEMGR is being started in the MSCONFIG Startup list. Some Virus/Trojans try to kill the protection functions of StateMgr. So it still sounds like you may have one. Try running HouseCall_AV as a backup check for virus.
