A serial connection would be user for:
1) A connection to an external modem. (May have been removed if you switched to
Cable/DSL broadband or an internal modem.)
2) A connection to an old printer or scanner, but almost all of them nowadays
use USB connections, so I assume your scanner is connected with a USB cable.
3) A connection to a UPS power supply. There would be software running on the
system that talks to the UPS power supply and shuts down the system safely when AC
power is lost.
4) A temporary connection to another system like a laptop, and was just left plugged
in In case it was ever needed again.
