FREE MS UPDATE CD  EMERGENCY BOOT DISK

Certainly the system is reading the drive so you should be able to make an image of the drive and burn it to CDRs, but it might be uneconomical do to so depending on the size of the drive. Given the message to Reinstall Windows it might be better to do so, but I don't know what state the computer is in, or how much maintenance has been done, if any. If you add Delindex.bat to the bootdisk and run it from the prompt you might clear the system, especially if it is likely that the drive is full and there is not enough free-space for it to start. A:\>delindex run , and press Enter. Then: A:\>scandisk /all /surface , A:\>scanreg /fix /opt And you can also try: A:\>scanreg /restore , to restore a working registry if one is still available. Will it start in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key whilst the computer is booting so that you can run scandisk and defrag from safe mode? Can you also run an Anti-Virus rescue disk set made on your computer, on the owners's computer to see if there is a virus? If you cannot get into the drive then, as a last resort you can slave the drive to another computer's Master drive and run an anti-virus scan and then check it to see if the data is recoverable and burn it to CDRs or transfer the data to the Master drive and fdisk partition & format the slave drive in preparation for a reinstall using the recovery CDs. I think you are looking at copying the drive's data to another drive using xcopy , but it is probably safer to slave the drive. If you can copy the missing file from the floppy to: c:\windows\system , you might be in with a chance: copy a:\shlwapi.dll c:\windows\system ... or possibly the logo.sys file is corrupt. A:\>del c:\logo.sys , and press Enter. Certainly there are things that you can try before formatting and reinstalling.
