Most of the time this type of hang is caused by either Malware like ADware/Spyware, Virus, Worms or Trojans, or backlevel hardware Device Drivers like your system board, video adapter or Ethernet adapter. For example, if your system has an Ethernet adapter on it, but you have never used it, its drivers are still loaded and Dial-Up Networking support used to access the Internet still tries to use this adapter to see if there is a connection there. So if there is a problem with the Ethernet adapter or its drivers, it can cause a hang.

But you say "this never happened be, it only just started, and I am not trying to connect to the Internet"! True, all it takes is change in the way an application is trying to access the Internet or the addition of a ADware/Spyware program that is trying to access the Internet, and this type of bug in old drivers will suddenly show up. Of course the first step is to get rid of any of these Malware programs first. Next correct some of Windows ME's own problems. Then upgrade all of your system's device drivers. Takes a lot of time to make sure your system is clean and up-to-date. Then if you still have problems, go through the complete debugging process recommended by Microsoft.
