Machine freezes on connecting to internet

Hi all,
I am running on Windows ME and each time I connect to the internet my machine freezes
- CPU usage goes up to 100%. I have looked at the Windows.ini and System.ini files
but cannot see anything in those that might be causing this problem (e.g. backdoor.ciadoor.c
which I read about on this forum).
Another strange thing is that I cannot use my System restore utility to rollback
my system settings further than about a month/month and a half. This is very unusual
as I have often rolled my settings back 6 months using the Sytem restore utility.
If anyone has any pointers on the best place to start looking for the cause of this
problem I would appreciate it.
