I assume this system was recently working without problems.

This type of problem usually means an infection with a virus, too many ADware/Spyware programs and Trojans and/or a Browser Hijacker. This could be a major learning experience trying to clean up your system yourself.

The first thing you need do is boot the system into Safe Mode to verify it is not a basic hardware problem. This restricted mode will allow you to run a few programs like System Tools - Disk CleanUp and your Anti-Virus scanner if you have one, but not access CD-Rom drives or the Internet (all in glorious 16 color mode).

To boot into Safe Mode, restart the system and before the initial Windows ME splash screen hold the left Ctrl key or F8 key down. This may take several tries, but you should get the Boot Menu. Select the Safe Mode option. When it finally stops, X out of the System Information Help window. Run Disk CleanUp just for a test. Then run SCANDISK for a test. If that works, try running a manual scan with your Anti-Virus program if you have one. You may want to go back to normal mode and update its definition files if it has not been updated recently.

Next you will have to download, install, update and run a whole list of spyware/ADware and Browser Hijacker scanners to try to fix most of the problems.

Before you start, you need to do a lot of reading about checking for and removing this type of Malware, cleaning up your system, doing Windows Updates and other security fixes for your system.

A good place to start is my Windows ME fixespage as it has all the links to information and programs that you will need. Read it from top to bottom to get an idea of all the different things you might need to do, and then start to work on the Removing Malware section first.

If your system is running so bad that you can not download and install programs, you might have to get STINGER.exe and CWShredder.exe downloaded on a working system, copy them to diskettes and then while booted in Safe Mode, run these two small programs from diskettes. If you don't have an Anti-Virus program installed and up to date. You might want to start with STINGER (a mini Anti-Virus scanner from McAfee) first as it is easy to download and run.
