Window Protection Error - You need to Restart your Computer System Halted?

I have just started getting the message "Windows Protection Error - You Need to restart
your computer. System Halted" - blue screen white font - at boot. The operating
system is Windows Millennium, and the system has been stable for some time. The boot
process gets as far a "Verifying Pool Data, hangs at this point for around 20 seconds
then the blue screen and message. I can boot OK into safe mode. Any ideas? thanks,
